Modi Faces Pressure Over Performance and Zanu PF Factionalism Claims

BULAWAYO — Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Raj Modi is facing growing political pressure amid claims that his government performance and alleged involvement in Zanu PF factional disputes have come under scrutiny, sources who spoke to ZimTimes have said.

The sources claimed Modi fears he could be removed from office in a future government reshuffle.

However, ZimTimes has not independently established that President Emmerson Mnangagwa intends to dismiss him, and no official announcement has been made.

Modi, who is also the legislator for Bulawayo South, is accused by some party insiders of failing to deliver adequately on his ministerial responsibilities and spending more time on internal political activities.

The sources further alleged that he has financially supported competing interests within Zanu PF structures in Bulawayo.

Other allegations raised against the deputy minister concern purported links to questionable commercial activities, including the production or distribution of illicit alcoholic beverages.

has not independently verified these claims, and no evidence of criminal charges or a court finding against Modi in connection with the allegations had been established at the time of publication.

The publication attempted to contact Modi for comment but had not received a response by the time of writing.

Questions were also sent to relevant government and Zanu PF representatives seeking clarification on whether his performance is under review and whether any formal complaints have been raised against him.

Modi remains entitled to the presumption of innocence regarding any allegation of unlawful conduct. ZimTimes will update this report if he, the Government or Zanu PF responds.

ZRP ORDERED TO PAY HARARE MAN US$15,000 OVER WRONGFUL ARREST AND DETENTION

The High Court has ordered the Zimbabwe Republic Police and Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe to pay US$15,000 in compensation to 52-year-old Harare resident Emmanuel Majoni.

Majoni was arrested alongside 73 other people in August 2016 on allegations of public violence. He told the court that police officers assaulted him during the arrest before detaining him in dirty and overcrowded cells at Harare Central Police Station.

He was later transferred to Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, where he reportedly spent nearly a month under harsh conditions.

Majoni continued facing criminal charges for about seven months before being cleared in March 2017.

Nearly a decade after his arrest, the High Court has awarded him compensation for unlawful arrest and detention, pain and suffering, and violation of his dignity.

Arrested in 2016. Cleared in 2017. Awarded US$15,000 nearly 10 years later. ⚖️💰

Former MDC-T Parliamentary Aspirant Celine Nyakutsikwa Reportedly Dies

HARARE — Zimbabwean opposition activist and former parliamentary candidate Celine Eunice Nyakutsikwa has reportedly died, although news of her passing only emerged on social media several months later.

Details surrounding the date, place and cause of her death remain unclear. At the time of publication, no formal statement had been located from her family or political associates confirming the circumstances.

Nyakutsikwa contested the Warren Park parliamentary seat in the 2018 harmonised elections under the MDC-T faction then led by Thokozani Khupe.

During her campaign, she pledged to empower women, create employment opportunities and improve service delivery in the constituency. Her political platform focused particularly on challenges affecting women and economically disadvantaged communities.

A 2018 profile published by VoteWatch263 documented her parliamentary campaign and commitment to women’s empowerment.

Tributes and messages announcing her death have since begun circulating online. Further information will be published once confirmation and additional details are received from her family or former political party.

This is a developing story.
