Funny how the Arsenal story has completely flipped over the years 🔄⚽

Back in the Arsène Wenger days, Arsenal were always accused of being all flair and no fight — great football, but not enough grit. Pundits lined up to call them “too soft.” Patrick Vieira himself once said, “They play some of the best football in the league, but they’re missing something — the physical presence, the personality.” 💬 Even Roy Keane didn’t hold back, saying “Arsenal are soft… weak… you’ve got no chance of winning big games if you defend like that.” 😬

That label stuck for years. Arsenal were seen as the team that could dance around you with the ball but collapse when it got physical.

You’ve got to remember what the game is about… winning football matches, that means scoring goals, not recording the expectation of them. ‘Expected goals’ have only come about in the last few years. It’s a clueless development. Some people just use these words to try to sound clever." 😤⚽

💭 He said this in a recent interview with The Guardian, taking aim at the modern obsession with data and analytics in football.

But what exactly is xG? 🤔📊

xG stands for *Expected Goals* — a stat that measures the **quality of chances** a team creates. Each shot is given a score between 0 and 1 based on how likely it is to result in a goal, using data from thousands of past attempts. For example:
⚽ A close-range tap-in might have an xG of 0.9 (90% chance of scoring).
🎯 A long-range shot might only have 0.05 (5% chance).

So if a team has an xG of 3.0 but only scores once, it means they created good chances but failed to finish them — not that they “should” have scored 3.

While many analysts love xG for giving a deeper look at performance, O’Neill believes football is about results, passion, and moments — not numbers and models 🔥❤️
