NIFCA tours Beitbridge Border over fire preparedness

BEITBRIDGE – NIFCA, which is the National Industrial Fire Control Association recently toured Beitbridge Border Post to assess the border over its fire preparedness.
The tour was led by Zimborders, a private consortium responsible for upgrading, modernising and operating the Beitbridge Border Post.
Speaking during the tour, ZimBorders manager Nqobile Ncube said his organisation had put a lot of emphasis in firefighting when it embarked on the modernisation of the border. This was more so after the border lost three warehouses to fire resulting in costly losses.

BEITBRIDGE – Sport and daily life shared the same lane on Saturday as athletes competing in the Two Countries Marathon crossed the Alfred Beit Road Bridge over the Limpopo River side by side with ordinary citizens going about their cross-border business.

The old bridge, which links Musina in South Africa and Beitbridge in Zimbabwe, was a hive of activity — on one side trucks queued on the new bridge, on the other runners pushed for the finish line while pedestrians walked past carrying bags.

The marathon featured 21km and 42km races, with runners from both Zimbabwe and South Africa taking part in the annual cross-border event that promotes regional unity and wellness through sport.

Black Gravity Energy has bailed out Central Region Division One outfit, Dulibadzimu FC, from being expelled from the league over an outstanding US$1 670 affiliation fee.
Black Gravity, a renewable energy provider specialising in solar power installations, maintenance, and energy solutions for residential, commercial, and agricultural clients, paid the outstanding fee for the Beitbridge team on Tuesday.

Beitbridge Town councillors have accused their mayor, Pilato Mafuta of “sleeping on duty” and turning the local authority into a charade where none of the passed resolutions are implemented. The councillors led by Ward 3 councillor, Takavingei Mahachi cited failure to implement council resolutions and by-laws as a crisis at the local authority.

Beitbridge Prison is celebrating 70 years this year as a ‘devastated institution’ with no budget for maintenance since independence and no toilets for visitors and staff. Officer-in-Charge, Superintendent Onai Chimujakazi told the Minister of State for Matebeleland South Provincial Affairs Albert Nguluvhe and business community as the prison marks its diamond jubilee, that the situation is dire. He said that the prison was built in 1956 and it operates without basic amenities including staff and visitors’ toilets, and a functional kitchen.

In 1984, Father Zimbabwe Joshua Nkomo warned us: "A nation can win freedom without its people becoming free." 42 years later, this has become our daily reality in Zimbabwe. The heartbreaking videos of rural and peri-urban houses being demolished prove that independence did not bring true liberation. We just changed the skin color of the oppressor. What is the benefit of being a Zimbabwean if owning a home on your ancestral soil is treated as a crime?
A black government forces ordinary black families to sleep in the freezing bushes while their life savings are turned to rubble. We were taught that the Rhodesian regime was the ultimate enemy of the black majority. But action speaks louder than words. If Ian Smith’s administration was entirely merciless, thousands of our grandmothers wouldn't own the stable, brick-and-mortar houses they still hold in Harare today.
The propaganda has completely run out of road. ZANU-PF has ruled alone since 1980. They mobilized the masses to die for the soil, promising that Zimbabwe would be the one country where land belonged to the people. Yet today, they chase citizens into the bushes, calling their homes "illegal". Shame on the second republic.
