Defined Domains Association, located at 24 Elliott Street in Rodene, Masvingo City, Zimbabwe, began in January 2024 as a humble day care center for children with disabilities. Founded with the vision of providing specialized support for vulnerable youths, the organization has grown into a fully registered non-profit dedicated to empowering children on the autism spectrum and those with other intellectual challenges. Today, its headquarters serves as a hub for inclusive learning, community support, and skill development.

The Association was established to address a pressing need: many children with disabilities, particularly those with autism, were underserved in Masvingo Province. Defined Domains provides a structured environment where children can thrive through tailored educational programs, skill development, and therapeutic activities. The Centre emphasizes both care and empowerment, ensuring that every child’s abilities are recognized and nurtured, while challenges are supported with empathy and expertise.

“Our children are unique, and they deserve patience, understanding, and care,” says Ms. Sylvia Chisasa, Founder and Director of Defined Domains Inclusive School (Autism Learning Centre). “Taking care of autistic children is not just about meeting their basic needs—it is about helping them discover their strengths and building a future where they can shine.”

Defined Domains offers a wide range of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of its students. Structured routines help children feel secure, while activities in music, art, and sports allow them to explore and develop their talents. The Centre also provides support for everyday challenges, including dietary considerations and repetitive behaviors, acknowledging the whole child in its approach.

The organization serves a vital role in the community. By raising awareness about intellectual challenges and promoting inclusion, Defined Domains helps families, educators, and the wider community understand and support neurodiverse learners. Beyond the classroom, it fosters connections between children, parents, and caregivers, creating a network of support that strengthens both individuals and the community at large.

Through its work, Defined Domains is changing perceptions about autism and intellectual disabilities in Masvingo. The Centre demonstrates that with structure, understanding, and encouragement, children with disabilities can not only overcome challenges but also flourish in their areas of strength. Defined Domains continues to champion a vision of inclusion, empowerment, and opportunity, proving that every child, regardless of ability, has the potential to succeed.

Ms. Chisasa encourages parents and guardians of children living with autism to bring their children to the Centre. “It is critical to harness the talents in these children for self-sustenance and to discover and nurture their potential. Many of them are talented artists, and with the right guidance, their skills can flourish,” she adds.

A Message to Parents and Community Leaders

The bravery shown by the teachers at Mlalazi Primary School in Gokwe, who stepped in to help children cross the dangerous Sengwa River, deserves our heartfelt gratitude. Their dedication reflects the true spirit of service and commitment to our children’s well-being. Yet, this incident is more than a moment of appreciation — it is a reminder of a problem that many other schools across the country are also facing.

Mlalazi is not alone. Across Zimbabwe, from the remote schools of Binga to communities in Chiredzi, Gutu, and Mutoko, countless children face similar risks as they cross flooded rivers, unstable footpaths, and unsafe terrain just to reach the classroom. These challenges place enormous pressure not only on the learners but also on teachers, parents, and the community at large. The danger becomes even more severe during the rainy season, when swollen rivers can turn a simple journey to school into a life-threatening ordeal.

We cannot remain silent or complacent.

This is a call to parents, guardians, community elders, and local leaders: the safety of our children must be treated as a national priority. We must stand together to find sustainable solutions — whether it means advocating for proper bridges, working with local leadership to secure safer routes, establishing supervised community crossing points, or engaging authorities to invest in rural infrastructure.

Our children’s dreams should never be interrupted by fear or danger. Their desire to learn should not be overshadowed by the threat of crossing a river. What is happening at Mlalazi Primary is a reflection of what many other communities are enduring, and it is a challenge that demands urgent collective action.

Let this be the moment we unite our voices. Let it be the moment we choose safety, dignity, and hope for every child who walks to school. Their lives are precious, and the future they carry deserves our full protection.

Hope Tariro Trust: A Beacon of Hope in Masvingo District

When I arrived in the Masvingo District, the spirit of Hope Tariro Trust greeted me long before I reached its centre. The atmosphere in Manyama Village carried a gentle sense of welcome and warmth, as though the community itself was breathing out hope. Women moved confidently through the vibrant rows of vegetables in the nutrition garden, tending crops that symbolized both nourishment and renewed possibility. Grandmothers sat together in soft circles of conversation, their laughter and shared stories reflecting the emotional healing and companionship they have found through the Trust’s support. The joyful voices of children floated from the small school blocks, where eager learners in ECD B and Grade One embraced their lessons with bright eyes full of promise. Livestock grazed quietly nearby, fruit trees swayed in the breeze, and community volunteers travelled between households offering encouragement and care. From the very first moment, Hope Tariro Trust revealed itself as a living space of restoration and empowerment—a place where hope is cultivated daily and where every effort is directed toward lifting children and families into a brighter future.

Hope Tariro Trust is a child-based charity organization that has been transforming lives since its formation and registration in 2003. Established to improve the livelihoods and prospects of vulnerable and orphaned children in Zimbabwe, the Trust stands firmly on its vision of creating a society that is just, socially supportive, and economically secure for every child. Its mission—to improve the lives and inspire hope in orphaned and vulnerable children through prevention, care, support, mitigation, and advocacy—has guided its work for more than two decades.

The Trust’s work is grounded in deep spiritual and cultural foundations. It draws inspiration from Biblical teachings such as Psalms 83:3–4, which calls on us to defend the cause of the weak and fatherless and to uphold the rights of the poor and oppressed. This spiritual compass is complemented by the African philosophy of hunhu or ubuntu, affirming human dignity, interconnectedness, and the belief that one’s humanity is strengthened by others. These principles shape a culture of compassion, respect, stewardship, accountability, and shared decision-making. Children are placed at the center—not simply as beneficiaries, but as participants whose voices guide the support they receive.

Throughout its programmes, Hope Tariro Trust works to meet the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs of children. Counselling, psychosocial support, early childhood education, and school clubs help nurture confidence, resilience, and personal growth. The Trust works closely with guardians, families, and community institutions so that children grow within environments that protect and uplift them.

One of the most profound contributions of Hope Tariro Trust has been its support for grandmothers—women who, after losing their adult children to HIV and AIDS, suddenly found themselves caring for young grandchildren. These grandmothers face enormous responsibilities, yet through the Trust’s guidance, they rediscover strength and a sense of purpose. Hope Tariro provides counselling, healing retreats, and continuous support through community-based volunteers. It empowers them with training in agroecology, helps them produce food sustainably, supports local seed preservation, and restores their ability to create secure, nurturing homes.

Health remains a central focus of the Trust’s mission. Hope Tariro promotes HIV treatment literacy and adherence, facilitates TB screening and treatment support, offers sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents and young women, and raises awareness of cervical cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. These efforts ensure that vulnerable families have access to life-saving health information and support.

In support of food security, the Trust champions agriculture to ensure that families can feed themselves and their children with dignity. It trains communities in agroecology, encourages the cultivation of drought-resistant small grains, and supplies seeds and skills that help households produce and market nutritious crops. Nutrition gardens, especially for families caring for children with special needs, offer both sustenance and empowerment. Through value addition and market linkages, families gain opportunities for income generation and renewed independence.

Manyama Village in Masvingo Rural District stands as a powerful example of what the Trust makes possible. Under the leadership of founder and director Fezile Ncube, Hope Tariro Trust has empowered fifty-two women and one man through sustainable livelihood projects that include a flourishing nutritional garden, a productive fruit orchard, and livestock initiatives comprising thirty-two goats and nine cattle. The community school run by the Trust provides early childhood education that lays a firm foundation for young learners.

Director Ms. Fezile Ncube highlighted that accommodation for teachers remains one of the most urgent needs, as the lack of suitable housing makes it difficult to attract and retain qualified educators. She emphasized that the Trust is striving to officially register its school, a crucial step in strengthening sustainability and recognition. However, the process requires a feasibility study costing US$1,500, as required by the Masvingo Rural District Council—an amount the organization currently cannot raise due to limited funding. The shortage of qualified teachers continues to affect the consistency and quality of education, leaving the Trust dependent on volunteers who serve with dedication despite the challenges.

Even in the face of these difficulties, Hope Tariro Trust remains unwavering. Its strength lies in its people—board members, staff, volunteers, and community members—who have chosen to believe in transformation and work toward it daily. The Trust continues to build partnerships, conduct research, and document its progress so that each lesson learned becomes a stepping stone to greater impact.

Across the villages where it serves, Hope Tariro Trust stands as more than an institution. It is a lifeline for children, a pillar of strength for grandmothers, a companion for struggling families, and a shining beacon of hope in communities striving for a better tomorrow.

Today, the Trust extends a heartfelt appeal to well-wishers, partners, churches, companies, and individuals of goodwill. Support is urgently needed—both in cash and in kind—to help the organization meet its most pressing priorities: teacher accommodation, the US$1,500 feasibility study required for school registration, the hiring of qualified teachers, agricultural inputs, classroom materials, and support for vulnerable children and grandmothers. Every contribution, no matter the size, plays a direct role in shaping a child’s future, strengthening a family, and sustaining the hope that defines this community.

On 15 November in Masvingo, at a colourful and elegant event, the Women of Substance will reunite for a long-awaited POW-WOW, three years after their last gathering in the Ancient City. This year’s edition comes with an exciting and historic highlight — the launch of the Women of Substance book, a publication that captures the remarkable stories of Zimbabwean women who rose against adversity to claim their place in society. The book, published by Prof. Ken Mufuka and Dr. Gallie Kawanzaruwa, is designed to empower the girl child by offering real-life role models whose journeys reflect resilience, courage, and success in male-dominated environments.

Sources close to the organizers reveal that this year’s POW-WOW will be more than a mere book launch. It is expected to be a vibrant celebration of achievement, sisterhood, and elegance. The Women of Substance are said to be preparing to share their accomplishments, reflect on their life journeys, and enjoy an evening filled with inspiration, glamour, laughter, and heartfelt moments. The event will take place at an exclusive garden restaurant in Masvingo’s central business district, where guests will indulge in a stylish banquet. A key highlight will be the unveiling of a portrait of their “Hero Woman of Substance,” whose identity is being kept secret, adding suspense and excitement to the occasion.

The idea for the book was born three years ago when several distinguished women gathered to recount the trials and tribulations they had endured throughout their lives. Many recalled that, despite showing great talent and giftedness from an early age, cultural norms within the Bantu family structure, coupled with colonial attitudes, placed greater priority on the advancement of boys. Girls, no matter how brilliant, often found their dreams pushed aside. Yet, these women defied the odds, carved their own paths, and rose to positions of influence and leadership at national and global levels.

Among the trailblazers featured in the Women of Substance book are prominent figures whose names read like a Who’s Who of Zimbabwean excellence. These include Senator Minah Mandaba; Sub-Chief Supreme Sister Happymore Mudyahoto, a former liberation war fighter; Dr. Gallie Kawanzaruwa, a Senior Academic Advisor in the United Arab Emirates; and Dr. Jesimen Tarisai Chipika, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. The guest of honour for the launch will be Dr. Divine Ndhlukula, Founder and President of Securico Security Services and Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa — a woman celebrated across the continent for breaking barriers and redefining female leadership. These distinguished women, affectionately described as “sisters in excellence,” share powerful narratives of sacrifice, vision, leadership, and transformation that will motivate girls and women for generations to come.

Registration for this prestigious Garden Party event is set at USD $20 including a book meals and refreshments. Attendance is expected to draw influential personalities, community leaders, and champions of women empowerment from across the country.
