I’m curious on learning about the ancient religions in Africa before colonization & slavery. It’s always inaccurately portrayed as pagan or devil worshipping by western society. I’ve come across many ancient religions & spiritualities in my travels across the continent. This is an example of the spirituality of the Great Zimbabwe Empire. No matter if I’m in Southern Africa or West Africa, one common theme is the respect and honor of ancestors.

The King of Great Zimbabwe, and yes, thats the late Chadwick Boseman.

There aren’t many illustrations that depict what the royals of the Great Zimbabwe Empire looked like. So in January, I asked an artist to illustrate the king & queen using traditional clothes and artifacts of the Shona culture. The guy came back with illustrations that used Chadwick & Lupita’s face, so I asked the illustrator to change the faces. He first changed the face of the queen and before he could change the face of the king, Chadwick had unfortunately passed away. I decided to keep Chadwick’s face to represent the king to pay homage & respect to the Wakanda King. Happy belated King.

The Great Zimbabwe ruins is massive ancient city which consist of 3 main sites. (1) “The Great Enclosure” was the Queen’s palace and is the most impressive of the sites. There's a lot of advance planning and engineering that went into building this structure . (2) “The Hill Complex” was the Kings Palace and is the oldest ruin at Great Zimbabwe. It also has an area that was used for worshipping. (3) “The Valley Complex” was where royal family members lived. Most of these structures were destroyed by Europeans digging for gold.
