The Liam Gallagher pose is to stop me cracking my knuckles while recording btw.
Songs have such strange ways of coming about. Some arrive fully formed, others take months to reveal themselves.
‘Ember’ was one of the latter. I originally had an idea for this really slow song that felt like wind chimes on a summer afternoon. I loved the chords and melody, but I just couldn’t finish it.
Then one random day I thought, what if I just slapped some drums on top?
It shouldn’t have worked, but it did.
Suddenly the song had a whole new life. I added a new section, then another, and another. It grew layer by layer until, after months of sitting in limbo, it all fell into place.
The vocals on the bridge were the last piece of the puzzle.
Now it’s the emotional core of ‘The Words At Play’ EP and I’m just glad I never gave up on it.
