It’s No Spray Spring and I’m all for it 🙌

Even organic sprays like BT can upset the balance by taking out all kinds of caterpillars, including the ones that become butterflies and moths we actually want around.
Every bite taken from a leaf is part of a bigger system at work. Caterpillars feed the birds, lizards and even the wasps that help keep the garden in balance. If you want to protect your edibles, use fine insect netting instead of sprays. You’ll still get your harvest and the wildlife around you gets to keep theirs too 🐛🦋
When we take the time to notice these small connections, we show our kids what it really means to care for the earth… to protect it, not perfect it.

It’s that time again!! My spring flings are back! Leioproctus plumosus male feeding on strawflowers. These little guys started my whole obsession with native bees and bug watching years ago, and I’ll never get tired of seeing them return.

I live in Perth, but I grew up in Sydney’s south west and every time I come back, I end up wandering through the bush again. The places I used to rush through as a kid are the ones that make me stop now… that and all the bugs I never noticed.
