Back in 1887, a group of determined young locals came together with no instruments and little experience — but within a year, the Sandgate Town Band was entertaining crowds along the foreshore and beyond.

From Christmas Eve carol tours to regattas, race days and grand public celebrations, the band quickly became part of everyday life in old Sandgate.

This month’s local history feature explores the rise of the Sandgate Town Band and the important role music played in bringing the community together more than a century ago. 🎶

A new self-published book, PAAF the Pigeon’s Sandgate RAAF WW2 Flight, is shining a light on the hidden history of the former RAAF Sandgate Station in Brighton and the stories woven through our bayside suburbs.

Written and illustrated by local author Dr Deborah Cronau, the book follows a pigeon guide through wartime Sandgate — and it’s all helping raise funds for the Sandgate Historical Museum.

Riverbend Ensemble is returning to Sandgate this month with a concert celebrating folk traditions, storytelling and the sounds of everyday life 🎻✨

The chamber music group will perform Folk Journeys – music from everyday life at St Margaret’s Anglican Church on 14 June, featuring Scandinavian folk music, contemporary works and familiar favourites.

The Brisbane City Council 2026–2027 Budget is shaping up to reflect strong community input from across the northside, with residents of the 4017 making their priorities known ahead of its release.

Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy received feedback through a recent survey, with residents highlighting concerns including localised flooding and drainage, ageing roads and footpaths, pedestrian safety, and upgrades to community facilities such as Einbunpin Lagoon.

Bracken Ridge Councillor Sandy Landers will be advocating for a continued focus on suburban road upgrades, footpaths, and community services.

The Budget will be tabled later this month under Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
