Although he has been known since the early '90s as DJ Dez, Humberto Hernandez has credited the majority of his gritty downtempo house and equally sample-laced hip-hop productions to alter-ego Andrés. Hernandez's earliest 12" releases under the alias, dating back to 1997, were so low in profile that some listeners assumed it was the work of Kenny Dixon, Jr. (aka Moodymann), who released it on his KDJ label. Hernandez ended all speculation by putting himself on the front of his self-titled album for Dixon's Mahogani Music, and has since issued three additional numerically titled Mahogani projects, among many shorter-form 12" releases for labels such as Moods & Grooves, Funk Night, and his own La Vida, all based in his adoptive hometown of Detroit.

Smos & Baby Bee were prominently rocking the electronic music scene since its dawn, shortly after the infamous second summer of love in the UK during the late 1980s and the rising of a new youth culture, a pivotal point in music history when under the spell of XTC a large audience became enthralled by the exciting new style of music coming from American cities such as Detroit and Chicago. They were DJing all over Belgium and through their genuine approach and straight forward mentality bringing together scenes from Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp or Wallonia. They were a DJ duo, a constellation nowadays well known but at the time truly rare. And not to forget, Baby Bee was a female acting in a mostly male world.

The visual archive presented in this publication generates an important cache of a creative culture that has been going through ups and downs, but is still very much alive and kicking to this very day. The book wishes to commemorate Smos, who is missed by many and remains in our hearts forever.

By making independent online radio, you bring the freedom of the night to daylight. Where the standard FM frequencies broadcast the nine-to-five soundtrack, an online radio station offers the conductors of the night a platform to share their art with the outside world and with people who are not (yet) actively involved in nightlife. Future Intel had their ups and downs lately, but with immense support from the scene, they kept on going and are now fully up and running again in their new location.

We catched up with the team and asked them some questions.
