Earlier this year I collaborated with award winning documentarian Barri Cohen to co-direct this heartfelt and moving short documentary about Stevie Mehlfuhrer, a survivor of horrific abuse in Ontario's institutional "hospital schools" such as the Huronia Regional Centre.

Through Family Alliance Ontario (who also generously supported the creation of this short film) Stevie's father Ted Mehlfuhrer collaborated with renowned Canadian songwriter Gregory Hoskins to write a song about Stevie, from Ted and his family's point of view. Together, they perform the song in this film: Stevie's Song.

Happy to see that Haldimand County has assumed the maintenance on and signed the Addy Cemetery in Walpole on Army Camp Road. This is a small cemetery with a single burial but it had the odd distinction of being a separate property from the surrounding farm. The odd part is that property was still owned by Anthony Addy, the gentleman buried in it!

With the assistance of Penny Plunkett and on behalf of the The Ontario Historical Society this cemetery was brought to the attention of Bereavement Authority of Ontario and working in partnership with them, Haldimand did a wonderful job of resurveying the cemetery, cleaning up hazards and installing signage.

Great job, Haldimand! It’s a small cemetery, but they all deserve attention, maintenance and protection.

Every year at the beginning of August, going on 5 years now, we celebrate Emancipation Day in Canfield with a get-together organized by Haldimand County. It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit the Street Cemetery, now publicly owned and maintained, and reflect on the many stories and experiences that make up the fabric of this country.
