Food bank need is rising across BC and the Columbia Basin. Here in Fernie, The Salvation Army Food Bank supports about 50 households a week across Fernie, Hosmer, Elko and Grasmere, while their Food Share program now serves over 600 people weekly, double since spring.

To help during this busy season, Columbia Basin Trust is providing $5,000 to 40 food banks, First Nation communities and Métis associations to support holiday meals, hampers and essential items.

The numbers tell a difficult story.

The Elk River Alliance (ERA) is giving thanks to the Elk Valley community for backing the We’re Trucked fundraising campaign, allowing the team to purchase a vehicle and achieve a record 2025 field season.

Thanks to overwhelming community support, ERA raised $40,127, including $29,000 in business sponsorships and $11,127 in individual and foundation donations. Matching funds from BC Gaming doubled community donations up to $30,000, helping ERA purchase a new field truck and get staff back out on the river.
