One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made was leaving behind my expat life in Thailand—a life I had spent six years building, along with a stable marketing career at a large corporation—to move to Canada and live with my fiancé (who was my boyfriend at the time).
A year later, I can honestly say I’m grateful I took that leap. That decision transformed our long-distance relationship into something much more real: a future husband-and-wife journey.
Back when we were still navigating long distance, every reunion felt magical. We counted down the days until our next trip, cherished every moment together, and tried to make the most of the limited time we had.
But saying goodbye at the airport? That was a different story.
No matter how many times we did it, it never got easier. Watching someone you love walk away, knowing it would be months before you saw them again, was heartbreaking every single time.
Still, moving wasn’t an easy choice. I left behind my comfort zone, my friends, my career, and the life I had worked so hard to create. I worried constantly.
What if moving in together changed everything?
What if I couldn’t adapt to a new country?
What if I had to start over and failed?
What if I regretted it?
The truth is, there were difficult moments. There were days I felt lost, overwhelmed, and uncertain about the future.
But looking back now, I realize that some of the best things in life begin with a terrifying decision.
This past year hasn’t been perfect, but it has been full of growth, love, and lessons. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sometimes you have to trust yourself enough to take the risk—even when you can’t see the whole path ahead.
Because on the other side of fear, you might just find the life you’ve been hoping for all along. 💚
