A dozen puppies were found in boxes abandoned on the side of the road in Niagara Region last Wednesday. The Niagara Region SPCA and Humane Society Animal Services Team said they were notified of two boxes of eight-week-old puppies along the side of the road last Wednesday afternoon. One of their officers drove immediately to find them and brought the puppies back to their shelter, which was already over capacity. When they arrived, the puppies were frightened, covered in dirt and their own waste, and some were wearing makeshift rope collars. The SPCA bathed all of the puppies, administered first vaccinations, conducted parasite treatments and full veterinary assessments. “These puppies didn’t choose how their story began, but together with our community, we’ll make sure it ends with safety, love, and a forever family,” said Amelia Canto, CEO of the Niagara SPCA. This is the second time in recent weeks that puppies were found abandoned, nearly a dozen were rescued from a cardboard box in Brantford earlier this week.

Canada’s last captive whales are set to leave the country on Monday as six belugas from Marineland are shipped to two aquariums in the United States. The closed Niagara Falls tourist attraction is up for sale and the park has said it is running out of money and can no longer care for its animals. Two of the belugas will be en route to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and four to SeaWorld in San Antonio. “There will no longer be any beluga whales or any other type of whales in captivity in Canada at the end of today,” said Marineland adviser Andrew Burns. Once the journey is complete, Marineland will have shipped 30 belugas and four dolphins over six moves to five different aquariums—the largest collective relocation of captive whales the world has ever seen. Canada banned whale and dolphin captivity in 2019 but grandfathered in the animals at Marineland. Nineteen belugas have died at Marineland since 2019.

The Ontario government has started construction on the Grimsby GO Station as part of its plan to fight gridlock, decrease travel times and support increased GO service to the Niagara Region. The province is using a new standardized design for the station to help reduce construction costs and speed up timelines. The new station will include one platform, 220 parking spaces, a bus loop and pick-up/drop-off areas. Grimsby GO will be the first GO Transit station using this new standardized approach, providing a repeatable model for future stations. The province has invested over $14 billion to deliver faster, more frequent service across the GO Transit network, including multiple investments to improve service on the Lakeshore West line.

The Niagara IceDogs will open the 2026-27 season with a new team captain and alternates following the off-season trade of Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Ethan Czata to the Guelph Storm. Fellow forward Ryan Roobroeck, an alternate captain, also was acquired by Guelph. The franchise’s 20th season in St. Catharines since relocating from Mississauga in 2007-08 gets underway Sept. 18 in Brantford, with the home opener Sept. 19 against Brampton. New head coach Jake Grimes, who replaced Kyle Barch, says he’s in no rush to name a captain, noting “every leadership group is different every single year.” The IceDogs also hired a new general manager, Dale DeGray, during the off-season.

Niagara-on-the-Lake wants to hear from residents about how to improve the municipality’s varied parking issues. This past spring, the town launched a comprehensive parking study that will focus on improving availability, accessibility, cost and helping to integrate parking with transportation alternatives. The town retained LEA Consulting Ltd. to complete the study, which will review parking concerns in Old Town, Virgil, Glendale, St. Davids and Queenston. The public can provide input through pop-up events, an online survey available until Sept. 30, and a public information session this fall. A final report is scheduled for council no later than February 2027. The survey is available at jointheconversationnotl.org.
