Based on Prehispanic Nahua stories Sebastian Purcell (Purcell, 2017) identifies the following three characteristics of our lives led on earth (or on tlalticpac in Nahuatl). Tlalticpac is a “slippery” place, our life on tlalticpac is transitory, and it is far from clear that tlalticpac is a happy place. Based on these characteristics, Nahua people understood that their aim is to achieve what they call neltiliztli (rootedness).
Basado en historias prehispánicas nahuas, Sebastián Purcell (Purcell, 2017) identifica tres características de nuestras vidas llevadas tierra (o en tlalticpac en náhuatl). Tlalticpac es un lugar “resbaladizo”, nuestra vida en tlalticpac es transitoria, y está lejos de ser claro que tlalticpac sea un lugar feliz. A partir de estas características, los nahuas entendieron que su objetivo es lograr lo que ellos llaman neltiliztli (enraizar).

In this third episode of 16 I am going to talk about the word “neltiliztli”, a holistic Nahua concept that has been poorly translated in a few occasions due to no other word achieving to completely englobe its meaning. “Rootedness” is the therm that most resembles it and is the purpose that Nahua people give o our lives, it goes far beyond finding your passion or even being happy.
