We have been seeing whales moving through our coastal waters, including near Prince Rupert Harbour, and it has been incredible to witness.

If you have spotted whales along the coast or nearby waters, we invite you to share your sightings in the comments. Photos, videos, locations, and the time you saw them are welcome.

For many Coastal First Nations, whales are relatives and powerful beings who have travelled these waters since time immemorial. Their presence reminds us that the ocean is alive and that we share responsibility for caring for it.

Let’s take a moment to honour these beings and the waters that sustain all of us.

Environment Canada has issued the first Arctic outflow warning of the season is now in effect for the North Coast’s inland areas, including Terrace and Kitimat.

The warning runs from now through Tuesday morning. An Arctic air mass combined with strong northeasterly outflow winds is driving wind chill values down to near minus 20.

Actual air temperatures will range from minus 9 to minus 11, but wind gusts up to 60 kilometres an hour will make it feel much colder and increase the risk of cold-related impacts.

Conditions are expected to slowly improve Tuesday morning as wind chill values rise.

Frostbite and hypothermia can develop within minutes if proper precautions aren’t taken. Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, ensure pets and livestock have adequate shelter, and be prepared for unusually cold and windy conditions.

As winter settles in and the holiday season approaches, many Indigenous families and Nations move through this time with teachings rooted in the land, the seasons, and one another.

Winter is a time for slowing down, sharing stories, passing on knowledge, and gathering with family. It is a season of reflection, gratitude, and caring for community. While Christmas is observed by many, it often blends with cultural values of generosity, kindness, and looking after one another, especially Elders and those who may need extra support during the cold months.

Whether marked through ceremony, faith, family traditions, or quiet time at home, this season carries reminders of resilience, love, and connection. From all of us at CFNR, we wish our listeners warmth, peace, and togetherness throughout the winter season.

The Terrace Kin Kormodei are inviting the community to kick off January 1st, 2026, with the 35th Annual Bear Swim, jumping into the icy waters of Lakelse Lake at Terrace Kin Kiddies Camp at 1:00 pm. It’s a New Year’s tradition built on courage, laughter, and togetherness. ❄️
