🇹🇩🇺🇦On Tuesday, President Nicușor Dan formally asked lawmakers to approve the dispatch of Romanian officers to France or Great Britain, under the banner of the “Coalition of the willing” and its support for Ukraine. The language was bureaucratic, the tone reassuring: advisers, not combatants; partners, not a war party. Then journalist Robert Turcescu published the request itself — and the calendar exploded. The file sat in a drawer for almost six months. That, more than any speech in Parliament, is what should keep people awake.

The Trump administration is reportedly considering a significant adjustment to its team handling negotiations over Russia’s war against Ukraine, with CIA Director John Ratcliffe potentially assuming a larger role in efforts to move Moscow and Kyiv toward a settlement.

🇷🇴🇷🇺 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has brought Călin Georgescu back into the international spotlight, praising him as a politician who advocated for Romania’s national interests.

🗣️ Lavrov also addressed the cancellation of Romania’s presidential election and criticised what he described as European double standards regarding interference in democratic processes.

The comments add another geopolitical dimension to the controversy surrounding Romania’s presidential vote and Georgescu’s political rise.

In remarks that quickly drew attention in Bucharest, Russia's top diplomat cited the case of Calin Georgescu as an example of what he described as the West suppressing democracy.

🇪🇺Germany’s recent electoral results for Alternative für Deutschland did not arrive as a surprise so much as a confirmation. For years the party has converted protest into structure: a durable base in the east, rising scores in the west, and a message that treats Berlin’s governing consensus—on migration, energy, Europe, and Ukraine—as the problem rather than the solution.

🚨 BREAKING: Donald Trump told Vladimir Putin that he wants the war in Ukraine brought to an end quickly and US-Russia relations restored, according to the Kremlin.

The hour-long phone call came as Russia launched another major attack on Kyiv, just a day after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held peace talks with Volodymyr Zelensky.

Moscow says Trump sees an end to the war as opening the door to renewed political and economic ties between Washington and Russia. But with missiles still striking Ukraine and no ceasefire in sight, the contrast between diplomacy and the battlefield could hardly be sharper.

The two presidents spoke for an hour on Tuesday in what the Kremlin called a "constructive and frank" conversation.

🚨Breaking: Romania's President Nicușor Dan has asked Parliament to approve sending up to 20 Romanian military personnel to the multinational command supporting Ukraine.

They would not be combat troops and would not be deployed to Ukraine. But in a country where only 10.5% of Romanians support military aid to Kyiv, even a limited military commitment is enough to reignite fears about where Romania’s involvement begins, and where it might eventually end.

Is this simply a modest contribution to allied security, or another step toward deeper involvement in a war Romania has no treaty obligation to fight?👇

🇹🇩To explain coherently yet concisely what I stated in the title—even if it strikes you as incredibly dramatic—I will take a brief look at actual recent history, not the version taught in schools. Let me remind you that the Cold War—during which we, Romania, belonged to the Soviet camp—lasted over forty years. It began shortly after World War II; the events of 1989 were, of course, a turning point, and the USSR dissolved in 1991.

🗺️ Almost everyone alive learned the shape of the world from a distortion. On the standard Mercator map, Greenland looks about the size of Africa. In reality, Africa is roughly 14 times larger, big enough to hold the US, China, India and most of Europe combined.

🌍 This week the UN General Assembly voted to correct it, backing a resolution led by African countries to adopt the Equal Earth projection, which shows the continents at their true relative sizes. The vote was 164 in favour, 6 abstentions, and only one country against: the United States.

🇩🇪 A political earthquake in Germany. The AfD has won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, taking 44.5% according to exit polls, more than double Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU on 18.5%, in a state the conservatives had governed since 2002.

⚠️ Not since the end of the Second World War has a nationalist party finished first in a German state election.

🕊️ After more than three years of war, there is still courage in continuing to try. Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow today, and travel to Kyiv tomorrow for their first visit to the Ukrainian capital since the president returned to office, carrying a proposal to end the fighting.

🤝 Two capitals, two days, one purpose. And a gesture from Kyiv that deserves to be known: Zelensky has offered to halt Ukraine's airstrikes during the visit, and urged Moscow to do the same, a small step toward the de-escalation that peace requires.
