Grayshott Folk Club introduces:

THE LUKE JACKSON TRIO
https://www.lukepauljackson.com/

One way of measuring the popularity and appeal of a performer, is to look at their gig diary............and Luke Jackson is a very busy young man. In July, he will be touring as support to Jools Holland again and he will be visiting us in August, on his way to playing at the Between The Trees Festival in Wales. Beyond that, Luke will be touring all over the UK in September, October and November. As well as playing in the UK, Luke regularly tours across Europe, USA and Canada.

Blessed with a distinctive, bluesy, soulful voice, UK based singer-songwriter Luke Jackson has developed an enviable reputation for himself around the Roots, Acoustic, Americana, Blues & Folk circuits by virtue of his acclaimed recordings and dynamic live performances, be they solo, as a duo or with his trio.

The bounteous health benefits of being enveloped in sweat-inducing heat are being more widely recognised, and mobile outdoors saunas are popping up all over the south coast and along the Thames in reaction to demand from health-conscious, well-being seekers. And here, in deepest darkest Surrey, the Hampton Estate has embraced the concept, but Surrey Hills style.

Hidden away on the sweeping landscape of the Hampton Estate, just outside Puttenham, is a very special, custom-built, one-of-a-kind community sauna: entirely off-grid, traditionally wood-fired and most uniquely, with huge picture windows on one side looking out on rolling pasture, veteran trees and in the far distance the wooded slopes of Blackdown, Haslemere.

It felt like a real adventure, walking from the car park along a rustic winding path through leafy woodland to then emerge at a clearing with hewn log seating and a smoldering firepit.

Conservation charity Buglife is launching an exciting new project to restore precious chalk grassland in the Surrey Hills – and they want local people to get involved.

A stunning but threatened landscape is getting a lifeline. With almost £300,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Buglife's new Chalk Lines project will restore more than 30 hectares of chalk grassland in the Surrey Hills – an area roughly the size of 42 football pitches – creating a haven for some of the UK’s rarest insects.

Why chalk grassland matters
Chalk grassland is a unique, specialised and fragile habitat, found on the rolling downland escarpment that sweeps across Surrey; it supports an extraordinary variety of wildflowers, butterflies, moths and beetles that simply cannot survive anywhere else. Centuries of traditional grazing kept this habitat in good health, but modern land-use changes have seen much of it lost or degraded.

Whether it’s a work trip or a family holiday, when I’m travelling, exercise becomes even more important – not less, says Clive Payne. When I get back home, I’m glad I kept going. Even a short workout can improve focus and productivity for a business meeting or offset an ice-cream on the beach.

You don’t need a gym to stay in shape. You just need the right mindset, a bit of planning, and tools that work with your lifestyle, not against it.

My approach: keep it simple and flexible
The biggest mistake people make is thinking they need to replicate their full gym routine while travelling. You don’t.

When I travel, I strip things back. I focus on short, effective sessions that I can do anywhere: a hotel room, outside, or even in a small apartment space. Flexibility is everything.

Some days I might train for 20 minutes. Other days it might just be 10. Sometimes it’s structured, sometimes it’s just movement. But I always do something.

The Benedictine monastery of St Augustine’s Abbey, Chilworth near Guildford is making an unusual appeal for donations of surplus garden plants after one of its new novice monks expressed a desire to continue developing areas of the monastery grounds.
The novice, who has a particular love of nature and gardening, finds working outdoors both rewarding and spiritually enriching. Gardening has become an important part of his prayer life, helping him to reflect on the beauty of creation while contributing to the life of the monastery.
Having already begun planting a number of Mediterranean-style species suited to the Abbey’s sandy soil, he casually mentioned to a volunteer that he would enjoy expanding the project if suitable plants became available.
With the blessing of Fr Abbot, the monastery is now inviting anyone with surplus Mediterranean or drought-tolerant plants to consider donating them over the coming weeks.

Some days out stay with you because of the mix of things you encounter along the way: wildlife on the path, conversations about food and farming, unexpected art in the landscape. This week we focus on Episode Two of Ambles & Rambles, a five-mile Frensham to Bourne walk that begins with a train to Haslemere and the number 19 bus, before setting out from Frensham Great Pond to Lower Bourne.

Ambles & Rambles is a new four-part podcast series from Whistlestop Arts, capturing that feeling in a set of free, car-free walks through the Surrey Hills National Landscape. At whistlestopart.org/amblesrambles you can find all four episodes, route information and ideas for discovering the landscape without a car. This article focuses on one of the four new episodes, following a richly varied journey from Frensham to Bourne.
