THE TIMES FOOD BOOK OF THE YEAR 2025

In The Sportsman at Home, Stephen Harris welcomes us into his kitchen in Whitstable to discover how to make classic, nostalgic home cooking taste even better than you remember.

The Sportsman is nothing short of an institution. Now in its 25th year, Stephen Harris took over a rundown pub on the Kent coast in 1999 and turned something ordinary into something extraordinary with his pared-back style of cooking, earning a Michelin star, as well as being named the UK’s best restaurant multiple times. It’s both a cult classic adored by chefs from all over the world, as well as a truly beloved, unpretentious local.

Organised into chapters such as Tea, Dinner, An Ode to Cream and Christmas, to name a few, Stephen captures the imagination for simple home cooking with his love of seasonal, local produce, and scholarly, much-lauded approach to putting flavour first in the easiest, most effective ways.

Robins are strongly associated with Christmas and regularly feature on Christmas cards and decorations. But did you know the tradition stems from British folklore, due to legends about the bird at the birth and crucifixion of Jesus, and the red uniforms of Victorian postmen who delivered Christmas cards?

Although Robins are one of the UK’s most common and best loved garden birds, there is plenty more to learn about these pretty red breasted birds.

Here, Maria Kincaid, in-house ornithologist for FeatherSnap, the Wi-Fi enabled smart bird feeder that connects people to nature, gives us her top ten ‘did you know’ facts about Robins:

- The inclusion of Robins on Christmas cards and decorations is thought to be because of Victorian-era postmen, which were nicknamed “robins” due to the bright red uniforms they wore.

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is thrilled to announce the return of their Christmas tree collection service. This January, in exchange for a donation, they will collect your real Christmas tree, take it away and recycle it. All funds raised will help support local families who have a baby, child or young person with a life-limiting condition, or who have been bereaved.

Working in partnership with JustHelping, a UK charity who aim to empower communities to raise money for local causes, Shooting Star Children’s Hospices will receive 90% of money raised, with the other 10% distributed to other local charities.

What’s more, as well as supporting local families, you will be helping the environment. This year, the charity is putting even more focus on sustainability. Recycling and chipping your real Christmas tree with Shooting Star, will reduce its carbon footprint by up to 80% - not to mention saving you time, hassle and mess – so you can start year new year needle free!
