Lighthouse Keeper’s Logbook • Oakmoss

Taking a closer look at our Lighthouse Keeper’s logbook, we discovered oakmoss - not actually a moss, but a branching lichen. Found growing on the trunks and branches of conifers and oak trees, it grows dotted across mountainous forests in the northern hemisphere.

Lichens are strange and beautiful - composite organisms, symbiotic arrangements of fungi and algae, they grow slowly and can live for a long time. Oakmoss varies in colour from very pale (Iona’s fronds here are silvery) to dark olive greens and deeper ambers when wet.

Oakmoss also happens to be a key ingredient in our Winter 26 fragrance - its inky depths echo the Hebridean sea, almost onyx in winter storms. Grounding the fragrance’s Sea Accord with its distinct forest floor aroma, this precious ingredient also works as a fixative to anchor lighter notes.

Set on the otherworldly coastline of the Isle of Skye, this season’s film, The Lighthouse Keeper, centres on Iona, who is watching the sea and shore for a vital change.

With her tattered logbook in hand, Iona has diligently taken note of her findings. Charting rare species and new sightings, her book is a palimpsest of daily treasures, great and small. Across its pages run the seasonal changes, folklore and flora that mark a lighthouse keeper’s days.

The Lighthouse Keeper, starring Ruth Wilson, is out on 21 December, the winter solstice - but ledger members can watch it now by scanning the cinema ticket that comes with every bottle 🎟️

Winter 26, our new fragrance, has begun to arrive with our ledger members in time for its official launch on the solstice - Sunday 21st December ✨

Inspired by the mythical coast of the Isle of Skye, Winter 26 is a fresh, elegant fragrance that carries the crisp, bracing beauty of the sea, the rugged headland and the warmth of a lighthouse perched high above the waves ❄️🐚

The Sea, The Sea…

For Winter 26, we are taking you to the rocky shores of the Isle of Skye, where perched on a headland, a lighthouse stands alone. Wild winds surround it, and winter waves crash below 🌊

Meditating on the waves, we reached for the water’s depths with an accord of oakmoss, spiced cardamom and cool violet leaf. Calling up the cold, we blended eucalyptus and peppermint - when combined together, these create a chill in the nose, like cold water.

Winter 26 • Perfumer’s Candle

Outside, an icy storm rattles, with wild winds and gusts and rain lashing down from snow-cold skies. The sounds of the land are harsh today. We burrow deep into our blankets, and light a fire to keep ourselves warm.

Inspired by the interior of a lighthouse, as a storm rages below, our Winter 26 Perfumer’s Candle is scented with natural extracts of rich coffee and sweet Peru balsam, resinous frankincense and brown-eyed rock rose - the inviting glow of an amber light flickering through salt-frosted windows.

For the first time, this season the Ffern Perfumer’s Candle is available to customers without joining the ledger.

Notes on Seaweed • Winter 26

Bladderwrack’s fronds are flat and branching, peppered with salty air pockets which keep it buoyant as the tide goes in and out. It lives between tidelines, providing shelter to many small coastal creatures.

People have also long appreciated its sheltering qualities - carrying it as a charm against mishaps at sea. A salty frond in a pocket, to throw against the high waves in a pinch.

Due to its high iodine content, black tang seaweed has been used as a cure for a wide variety of ailments in traditional medicine, from thyroid problems to wrinkles. We recommend a seaweed bath as a soothing cure for tired bones.

‘So that was the Lighthouse, was it? No, the other was also the Lighthouse. For nothing was simply one thing. The other Lighthouse was true too.’

For our Winter 26 season, we’re taking you to the lighthouse - and like Virginia Woolf, we’ve discovered an imaginative realm of reflections and doubles. A place where magic can happen.

We are very much looking forward to sharing that magic with you in the coming days and weeks, as winter really begins ✨
