SELF PUBLISH RIGA international photobook dummy contest
On Sunday May 11 the 10 best books of the international SELF PUBLISH RIGA photobook dummy contest were announced in Riga, Latvia. The contest received almost one hundred entries from over 30 countries, which were reviewed by an international jury: Markus Schaden, founder of the Schaden publishing house (DE), Ania Nalecka, photobook designer (PL), Matt Johnston, founder of The Photobook Club (UK), Teun van der Heijden, photobook designer (NL), Juris Petraškevičs, professor, Art Academy of Latvia (LV) and Nico Baumgarten, independent photographer and bookmaker (DE).
A shortlist of 45 book dummies was exhibited during the SELF PUBLISH RIGA event from May 9-11 at The Mill co-working space in Riga. Alongside an exhibition of curated photobook collections, the event saw 2 days of lectures and artist talks on photobooks and self-publishing, organized by ISSP as part of Riga Photomonth 2014 and the Riga 2014 European Capital of Culture programme.
First Prize was awarded to “Becoming Simone” by Alessia Bernardini (Italy) – the story of a man living in a female body until the age of 51. Second Prize went to “3rd Generation” by Mafalda Rakoš, Iuna Vieira and Raphael Reichl (Austria) – a social documentary project on Israeli and Palestinian youth. Two additional books received Jury Special Mentions: “Chomsky” by Līva Rutmane (Latvia) and “Dreaming Leone” by Alvaro Deprit (Italy).
