We are architects and curators based in Goa with a keen eye for all things and ideas that are quintessentially Indian. Matter is about making and thinking architecture. The two focuses are Architecture and Content.
The studio works in and for India. We offer architecture and urban design consultancy, curatorial expertise and editorial services.
Our architecture recognizes and appreciates beauty in simple objects, evocative volumes and true nature of materials. Our work strives to invoke the inherent magnificence of spaces in the quietude of form.
The aesthetic is centered on an idea that nothing lasts forever, nothing is complete and nothing is perfect. We draw from the incredible wealth of resources offered by India and her rich landscape. We make cost-effective and efficient buildings.
With attention to detail and focus on quality, our studio is generally involved in all aspects of work sometimes much beyond our mandate to savour and enrich the process of making. We strive to achieve enduring images and ideas as each project takes its unique course and trajectory.

Research
Apart from professional projects, the studio is constantly invested in applied research / studies, documentation, discourse, teaching and archiving. Our research forms an integral part of our design process. It informs and is informed by our practice.
Public-Interest Architecture
Matter. works pro-bono on social projects and research initiatives for non-profit organizations and government departments. We consistently encourage our collaborators to donate time and expertise to these initiatives as our professional responsibility.
CONTENT
Matter. is invested in architectural discourse. Our content initiatives aim to celebrate the diversity and richness of ideas and practices that are quintessentially Indian and relate to challenges and opportunities that are presented by our context.
www.thinkmatter.in is our primary publishing platform. Our readership and contributors include some of the most respected architects, designers, thinkers and teachers from India and its subcontinent.
THE FRAME CONCLAVE is instituted as an independent, biennial professional conclave on contemporary architecture in India curated by Matter and organised in partnership with H & R Johnson (India) and Takshila Educational Society. The intent of the conclave is to provoke thought on issues that are pertinent to pedagogy and practice of architecture in India. The first Frame Conclave was hosted from 16th-18th August 2019 at the National Institute of Oceonograpy, Goa.
[IN]SIDE is a content initiative by Matter in collaboration with H & R Johnson (India) published as a series of bi-annual journals and an online platform on Contemporary Architecture and Design in India. Three editions of [IN]SIDE have been published till 2019.
THE MERIT LIST is an initiative by Matter supported by Takshila Educational Society to recognise projects of critical relevance in the context of contemporary architecture of India. The 2018-19 Cycle was the third cycle of The Merit List.
We curate books, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, lectures, discussions, workshops, interviews and related rich-content with a strong belief that we can influence the trajectory of architecture and serve our fraternity consciously.
