Sit-In Protest Held at Thambalkhong Over NRC Demand

August 25, 2026:

A sit-in protest demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the conduct of the Census was held at Thambalkhong in Imphal East today.
The protest was organised by the Kshetrigao Nupi Lamjing Lup with the participation of Thambalkhong Meira women.
Speaking during the protest, Pangambam Anita said the women’s groups were firm on the demand of “No NRC, No Census.” She said census personnel would not be allowed to conduct the Census in the Kshetrigao area unless the NRC is updated first.
She appealed to the authorities to take note of the demand raised by the people and initiate appropriate action before proceeding with the Census exercise.
Anita further warned that if any untoward incident occurs in connection with attempts to conduct the Census without addressing the NRC demand, the concerned authorities would be held responsible.

14 CSOs, Community Leaders Push for NRC First, Demand Census and Delimitation Be Put on Hold

NEW DELHI,
August 25, 2026:

A coalition of 14 CSOs Kangleipak and community leaders representing different sections of Manipur on Tuesday stepped up their demand for the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census and any delimitation exercise, urging the Centre and the Manipur government to put the proposed exercises on hold until the identification of Indian citizens is completed.

Addressing a press conference at the Indian Women Press Corps in New Delhi, 14 CSOs Kangleipak Convener Santa Nahakpam said the delegation had approached the Prime Minister’s Office, the Union Home Ministry, the Registrar General of India and other authorities with representations seeking the identification of Indian nationals before any delimitation exercise in Manipur.

The delegation maintained that there is a significant gap between the concerns and aspirations of the people of Manipur and the manner in which the issue has been presented before central bureaucrats and political leaders.

Santa further said, the group has demanded that 1951 be adopted as the base year for identifying Indian citizens and updating the NRC in Manipur. The delegation cited the first Census and NRC exercise conducted in the state in 1951, following the abolition of Manipur's entry and exit pass system in 1950, among the reasons for its demand.

The 14 CSOs and community leaders also raised concerns over changes in the number of villages and administrative units over the years, arguing that the identification of citizens must be completed before the Census or any delimitation exercise is undertaken.

Highlighting Manipur's porous international border with Myanmar, the delegation said the issue of identifying citizens had become crucial and called upon the Government of India and the Government of Manipur to defer the present Census exercise and facilitate the updating of the NRC before undertaking delimitation in the state.

The group further sought a tripartite dialogue involving different stakeholders to discuss the implementation and exercise of the NRC before delimitation, acknowledging that Manipur is inhabited by indigenous, native and newcomer communities with different concerns.

The press meet was attended by Santa Nahakpam, Convener of 14 CSOs Kangleipak; Leishangthem Yaiphaba Meitei, Joint Secretary of ACOAM Lup, Kangleipak; Leirikyengbam Bedic, General Secretary of Ireicha Kanba Lup; Dr Heera Kabui, President of Kabui Union Manipur; Serto Chungjahaon Kom, President of Kom Union, Manipur; Seikh Muhammad Jalaluddin, President of the All Manipur Muslim Organisations Coordinating Committee; Gaikhiam Thaimei, Vice President of the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation, Manipur; and Sagolsem Kulla, Convener of Manipur Ima, representing internally displaced persons in Manipur.

Reiterating their stand, the delegation urged stakeholders to examine Census data from 1951 to 2011 and maintained that the Census should be postponed and the NRC updated before any delimitation exercise is carried out in Manipur.

United College Holds Press Conference Ahead of National Sports Day Celebration

A press conference was held today at United College, Chandel regarding the upcoming National Sports Day celebration to be organised by the NSS Unit on August 27, 2026, marking the birth anniversary of legendary hockey icon Major Dhyan Chand.

Addressing media persons, Dr. Augustine Roel, Programme Officer of the NSS Unit, United College informed that this year's celebration will be organised under the nationwide Khelo India Samwad initiative with special focus on youth participation, sports development and nation-building. He said that on 27th August, the NSS Unit of the college will organise National Sports Day on the college premises. Under the programme, Yuva Connect will be organised to give youth an opportunity to interact directly with sportspersons, MLAs, Ministers and local leaders. The initiative also aims to highlight the transformation of India's sports ecosystem over the past 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while providing a platform for youth to share their ideas and aspirations. On August 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually address over eight lakh young participants gathered at around 1,600 locations across the country.

He further informed that following the virtual address, Yuva Samvaad — a local interaction programme — will be held where MY Bharat Volunteers and sportspersons will discuss sports infrastructure, growth of the sports ecosystem and opportunities for aspiring athletes. The Yuva Samvaad will centre on four key themes — strengthening the grassroots sports ecosystem, nurturing talent for the 2036 Olympics, enhancing youth leadership in governance, and empowering youth for Viksit Bharat. He appealed to the youth of Chandel to actively participate in the National Sports Day celebration and share their vision during the interaction sessions.

Stronger Agitation If NRC Demand Ignored: JFD

August 25, 2026:

Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) Finance Secretary Sunil Karam has warned that a stronger agitation than the June 18 incident would be launched if the State Government fails to act on the demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before conducting the Census.
He made the statement during a public meeting held at Thoubal Athokpam Bazaar by Athokpam Meira Paibi Apunba Lup and Athokpam Apunba Club, demanding that the Census not be conducted before the NRC is updated.
Sunil Karam said the JFD and people of the State have repeatedly appealed to the government to update the NRC before conducting the Census. If the government continues to ignore the demand, the responsibility for any movement arising from public resentment would lie with the government, he said.
He urged elected representatives and those in authority to understand the sentiments of the people and take appropriate action.
Referring to the recent visit of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and some MLAs to Delhi, Sunil Karam said the leaders should have firmly conveyed the people's demand to the Central leadership instead of merely holding meetings. He questioned the State Government's silence on the issue and urged it to support the people's demand.
Sunil Karam warned that preparations were already underway for an agitation stronger than the June 18 protest if the demand remains unaddressed.

DCPU Kangpokpi Holds Child Protection Awareness Programme

The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Kangpokpi, organised a one-day awareness programme on child protection at Revelation International School, Makhan, with the objective of sensitising children about their rights, safety and protection.

The programme focused on encouraging children to speak up against abuse, exploitation and other forms of violence. The awareness session was conducted by Reena Chanu Moirangthem, District Child Protection Officer, and Kangbam Kishorjit Singh, Legal-cum-Probation Officer, DCPU, Kangpokpi.

Using the concept of “Learning with Fun”, the officials conducted an interactive session covering child rights, child abuse, trafficking, child labour, child marriage and other forms of exploitation.
The children were encouraged to recognise unsafe situations, understand their rights and seek help from trusted adults and appropriate authorities whenever they feel threatened or unsafe.

A special session on Good Touch and Bad Touch was also conducted, using age-appropriate examples to help students understand personal safety and body boundaries. The children were encouraged to confidently say “No”, move away from unsafe situations and immediately report inappropriate or uncomfortable touch to trusted adults.

The programme also included cultural activities, with students presenting a dance performance. Stationery items were distributed among the children as a gesture of encouragement and support for their education.

Kakching Khunou College to Observe National Sports Day

Kakching Khunou College will observe National Sports Day on August 27 as part of the nationwide programme being organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Speaking to the media, Programme Coordinator Ksh. Biren Singh, Assistant Professor in the Department of History, said the observance would be held under the theme “Youth Participation, Sports Development and Nation Building.”
Biren Singh said the Ministry has planned various programmes across the country to mark National Sports Day, and Kakching Khunou College will also organise a series of activities to commemorate the occasion.
He appealed to students, sportspersons, sports enthusiasts and members of the public to participate in the programmes and contribute towards bringing people together through sports and promoting nation-building.
Principal Oinam Bijoy Singh said National Sports Day is observed in honour of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand Singh, an iconic figure in Indian sports.
He said the college would observe the occasion through various programmes aimed at encouraging greater participation in sports among students and the wider community.
NSS Programme Officer M. Pramodini, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Kh. Manglem, Assistant Professor of Home Science Dr O. Sareeda and NSS volunteers also attended the media briefing.
