Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Inaugurates Maxwell Hospital, Highlights Commitment to Quality Healthcare

Siliguri: Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang on Sunday inaugurated Maxwell Hospital in Siliguri, a healthcare institution established under the initiative of Dr. Vishal Golay.

The inauguration ceremony marked a significant step toward strengthening healthcare services in the region and highlighted a commitment to public welfare and accessible medical care.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the hospital would serve not only the people of Siliguri but also residents of Sikkim by providing quality treatment and modern healthcare facilities.

He noted that the establishment of the hospital would contribute meaningfully to the well-being of society and help improve access to advanced medical services for patients from neighbouring areas.

The Chief Minister also extended his congratulations to the hospital management and conveyed his best wishes for the institution’s continued success and growth in the years ahead.

Three-Day Training on Hygienic Fish Processing and Value Addition Held at Pakyong District

A three-day residential training programme on Hygienic Fish Processing and Value Addition with Cold Chain and Market Linkage Support, is being held at Namcheybong GPK Hall, Pakyong, today.

The programme is being organised by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), North Eastern Regional Centre, Guwahati under the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, in collaboration with the Fisheries Department, Government of Sikkim.

The training is conducted for the participants from the Scheduled Caste category aimed to equip them with hands-on training in the preparation of value-added fish products and to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for them.

The programme was graced by OSD, IT Department, Mr Bum Tshering Yonzon, as the Chief Guest.

In his address, he highlighted on the Chief Minister’s vision of uplifting the farmers through various schemes and initiatives and encouraged them to become self-reliant. He further urged the participants to attain necessary skills and explore opportunities within the aquaculture sector to enhance their livelihoods.

Additionally, District Fisheries Development Officer, Ms Gauri Mukhia emphasised that the training would enable the participants to explore diverse opportunities in fish value addition while equipping them with practical knowledge. She then elaborated on the various initiatives under the MMMUY and PMMSY schemes, further assuring to provide necessary support in uplifting them.

Further, Executive Assistant, NFDB Guwahati, Mr Sharad SP outlined the objectives of the training, highlighting the growing market demand and profitability of value-added fish products. He further stated that the fisheries industry and allied activities offer a vast potential for employment generation.

Prior to it, a Farmers’ Meet was also organised wherein the resource person interacted with farmers, addressed their queries and shared information on benefits and subsidy schemes available under PMMSY.

A technical session was also conducted to provide the 25 trainees with guidance on the preparation of various value-added fish products.

The programme concluded with the distribution of testing kits and ice boxes to trout farmers from ICAR-CICFR, along with a demonstration of their usage and testing procedures, followed by the release of the Hands-on Training Manual for Preparation of Value-Added Fish Products.

Also present were officials from Fisheries Department and trainees from various regions of Pakyong District.

Bi-Annual AAC Meeting Held at Pakyong Airport

The Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) convened its bi-annual meeting at Pakyong Airport to review the current status of airport operations and deliberate on the resumption of passenger flight services.

The meeting was chaired by Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Dr Indra Hang S***a, and attended by Hon’ble MLA of Gnathang–Machong, Mrs Pamin Lepcha. The session brought together key stakeholders, including senior government officials, administrative authorities, airport and security personnel, and representatives from trade and local associations.

Among the attendees were OSD, IT Department, Mr Bum Tshering Tamang, former Member of Parliament, Mr Nakul Das Rai; Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, Mr CS Rao, IFS; District Collector, Pakyong, Mr Agawane Rohan Ramesh, IAS; CA to the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Urgen Lepcha; DFO, Pakyong, Mr SP Bhutia; and General Manager, NHIDCL, Apan Bhaumik.

Representing airport and security authorities were Senior Superintendent of Police, Pakyong District, Mrs Paru Ruchal; Airport Director, Pakyong Airport; Mr BT Pote, and Chief Airport Security Officer (CASO), Sikkim State Police, Mr CK Pradhan.

The meeting also saw participation from industry and local representatives, including Mr Yap Tshering Kazi, Mr Diwakar Basnett, Ms Urmila Sharma, Mr Sonam Chopel Sherpa, and Mr Govind P Sharma.

The primary focus of the six-month review meeting was to address public and administrative concerns regarding passenger flight operations. Detailed discussions were held on key issues such as the resumption of flight services, operational challenges faced by the airport, infrastructure requirements, and strengthening of security measures.

Officials from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, District Administration, Police, and Airport Management shared inputs and suggestions to improve coordination and streamline operations. Representatives from the trade, tourism, hotel, and transport sectors also highlighted the impact of disrupted air connectivity on economic activities and emphasized the need for timely restoration of services.

The committee expressed a collective commitment to resolving existing operational hurdles through coordinated efforts. It was resolved that necessary and actionable steps would be undertaken in the coming months to ensure safe, consistent, and reliable air connectivity for the people of Sikkim as well as visiting tourists.

सम्माननीय मुख्यमन्त्री महोदयज्यूको स्पष्ट निर्देशनअनुसार उहाँका गोपनीय सहायक श्री उर्गेन लेप्चाज्यूको नेतृत्वमा रिनक क्षेत्र अन्तर्गत व्यापक सामाजिक अवलोकन कार्यक्रम निरन्तर रूपमा सञ्चालन हुँदै आइरहेको छ। यसै क्रममा आज आयोजित कार्यक्रममा उहाँसँगै OSD श्री डी.बी. छेत्री, DPO श्री तुला राम छेत्री, RO/AD श्री किरण प्रधान, पाक्योङका उप–जिल्ला अधिकारी (SDM) श्री नीलकण्ठ भण्डारी, पाक्योङका खण्ड विकास अधिकारी (BDO) श्री साङ्गे तामाङ, पञ्चायत प्रतिनिधिहरू, एस.के.एम. पार्टीका कार्यकर्ताहरू तथा विभिन्न विभागका अधिकारीहरूको उपस्थिति रहेको थियो।

उक्त टोलीले विभिन्न क्षेत्रहरूको स्थलगत निरीक्षण गर्दै धुनके SGAY हाउस, पिथाङ पहिरो प्रभावित क्षेत्र लगायत अन्य संवेदनशील स्थानहरूको अवलोकन गरेको छ। निरीक्षणका क्रममा स्थानीय अवस्थाबारे जानकारी संकलन गर्दै आवश्यक सुधार तथा व्यवस्थापनका विषयमा समेत ध्यान केन्द्रित गरिएको थियो। ताक्छाङ–कैञ्जले क्षेत्रमा कुवा पानी नजिकै पहिरोको उच्च जोखिम देखिएको छ, जसका कारण त्यहाँ रहेका तीनवटा घरहरू गम्भीर खतरामा परेका छन्। सो जोखिमलाई मध्यनजर गर्दै ती घरहरूलाई सुरक्षित स्थानमा स्थानान्तरण गर्नुपर्ने आवश्यकता औंल्याइएको छ।

Pakyong, 18th April, 2026.
As per the directions of the Hon’ble Chief Minister-cum-Area MLA, Shri Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, a team visited the landslide-affected area along the Pakyong–Mamring road near Pachey Khola this morning to assess the damage. The team was led by the OSD to the IT Department, Shri Bum Tshering Yonzon, and included Councillor Smt. Rozi Gurung, Panchayat Member Shri Arjun Pathak, SKM party worker Shri Mitra Lall Chamlagain, along with other members.

During the visit, the OSD to the IT Department coordinated telephonically with concerned department officials and engineers to ensure the prompt clearance of debris caused by heavy rainfall, thereby restoring road connectivity at the earliest.

Subsequently, the debris was successfully cleared, and normal vehicular movement has been restored.

कार्यक्रमका मुख्य अतिथि आफ्नै समाजका समाजसेवी श्री फौदासिङ राई हुनुहुन्थ्यो भने विशिष्ट अतिथिका रूपमा समाजका सम्पूर्ण बुजुर्ग व्यक्तिहरूको उपस्थिति रहेको थियो। पञ्चायत श्री सी. के. गिरीको नेतृत्वमा आयोजित यस कार्यक्रममा समाजका सबै सदस्यहरूको बाक्लो उपस्थिति रहेको थियो। कार्यक्रममा हरेक भूमिकामा योगदान पुर्‍याउने सबैजनालाई साथै समाजका बुजुर्ग तथा वृद्ध व्यक्तिहरूलाई सम्मान जनाइएको थियो। साथै, कार्यक्रममा विभिन्न सांस्कृतिक प्रस्तुतिहरूले विशेष आकर्षण थपेका थिए। यसरी जन उत्थान समाजले सुरुदेखि नै कुनै पनि सामाजिक कार्यमा पछाडि नहटेको र एउटा उदाहरणीय समाजको रूपमा स्थापित भएको स्पष्ट हुन्छ।
