One of the things we’ve come to love most about life in Asia is how easy it is to slow down and enjoy nature and your favorite drink. It’s simple, peaceful, and always leaves us feeling recharged.

What’s your favourite kind of date? 🤍✨🍵

We arrived at Phnom Sampov in Battambang Province in our Tuk-tuk and noticed people quietly gathering. Families, travellers and locals all waiting with a shared sense of anticipation, looking into the caves. 🤍

Then, as the sun begins to set, it happens. 🦇

Within moments, thousands become tens of thousands. Soon, millions of wrinkle lipped bats pour from the cave in a continuous ribbon across the evening sky. For nearly an hour, they twist and flow like a living river, moving as one before disappearing into the distance to feed. 🌅

It is difficult to describe the feeling until you see it for yourself. The scale is overwhelming, yet strangely calming. It is a reminder that nature has been performing this timeless ritual every evening long before any of us arrived. ✨

Beyond the spectacle, these bats play a vital role in the ecosystem, consuming enormous numbers of insects each night and helping protect nearby farmland. 🌿

Phnom Sampov also carries deep historical and spiritual significance. The mountain is home to Buddhist temples where monks still worship, and many Cambodians visit to pray and reflect. It is also a place that bears the memory of Cambodia’s tragic past, with the nearby Killing Caves serving as a solemn reminder of resilience, remembrance and hope. 🙏

Standing there as daylight fades into darkness, you cannot help but feel connected to nature, to history and to something much bigger than yourself. ❤️

Some places entertain you.

Places like this stay with you. ✨

🛺 We got here by tuk tuk, and honestly, we could not recommend it more. Feeling the wind in our hair, taking in the countryside and being completely immersed in nature made the journey just as memorable as the destination. Sometimes the best way to experience nature is to slow down and let it lead the way.

✨Built by the French in the 1930s, Cambodia’s railways were left in ruins after the Khmer Rouge era. In Battambang, locals responded with quiet ingenuity. By salvaging parts to create the Norry, a simple bamboo platform on wheels that became a lifeline for people and goods through the countryside.

🛤️Today, riding this handmade train is still a raw, unforgettable experience: clattering along overgrown tracks at speed, wind rushing past, surrounded by rice paddies and village life. It’s a living reminder that from hardship can come resilience, creativity, and forward movement.💨🚂

🚂🌾 The Bamboo Train of Battambang: Cambodia’s Rolling Monument to Resilience 🇰🇭

In the shadow of war and abandonment, ingenuity took the wheel. 🔥 After the Khmer Rouge era devastated Cambodia’s French built railways (constructed in the 1930s), locals in Battambang refused to let the tracks fall silent. They salvaged war remnants, truck parts, motors, and axles and crafted the Norry (or “bamboo train”): a simple bamboo platform on metal wheels, powered by a small engine, racing up to 50 km/h along overgrown rails. 🌿

✨ What began as a practical lifeline for transporting goods, people, rice, and bricks through rural villages became an iconic symbol of human adaptability. These makeshift trains once connected communities when roads were poor and formal rail service had collapsed. Today, the remaining stretch (about 7km) offers travelers a thrilling, bumpy ride through lush countryside, rice paddies, and timeless village scenes blending history, adrenaline, and raw authenticity. 🚀

🌱 It’s more than a ride: it’s a thought provoking reminder that from destruction can rise creativity. In a world of high speed everything, the Norry whispers that the simplest solutions often carry the deepest stories. A living piece of post war resilience, now shared with visitors who come to feel the wind, hear the clatter, and witness Cambodia’s enduring spirit. 💪

Swipe through these motor scenes, dusty roads, and golden countryside vistas, each frame a chapter in this unique tale. 📸 Have you ridden a Norry? What does “resilience” look like in your journey? 👇
