The Future of Data Centers: Lessons from SOM

Images by SOM

Images source: Dezeen

In a bold departure from the expansive, warehouse-style "data farms" dominating the technology landscape, international architecture studio SOM has unveiled designs for 934 Central Street in downtown Kansas City, USA. Originally reported by Dezeen, the proposal introduces a 20-storey vertical data center squeezed onto a compact 0.23-acre parcel, a radical reimagining of how digital infrastructure can co-exist with dense urban environments.

As the global demand for AI processing power surges, SOM’s vertical concept offers a blueprint for the future of urban architecture, economic growth, and adaptive city planning.

Driving Innovation: What to Expect at the 2026 Nigeria Mega Project Expo

The Nigeria Mega Project Expo has established itself as far more than an annual trade exhibition; it serves as an economic engine for West Africa’s construction and real estate sectors. By convening over 5,000 international and domestic delegates annually at the Landmark Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos-Nigeria, the expo generates direct economic value through commercial contracts, foreign direct investment, and localized supply chain integration.

Beyond high-value commercial transactions, the event’s social footprint is equally substantial. Through hands-on technical workshops, masterclasses, and certified seminar series, the expo bridges the divide between theoretical education and field practice. Emerging artisans, engineers, and architects gain practical exposure to advanced construction methodologies, directly contributing to workforce development, capacity building, and employment generation across Nigeria’s building sector.

Solution-Based Design in Africa: How Architecture Is Leading the Mantle

Originally featured on Designboom, the Lei Wa Lakom Library in Kazole Village, Zanzibar, stands as a compelling testament to how African architecture is actively championing ecological, solution-based design. Rather than imposing foreign structural archetypes onto the tropical Tanzanian landscape, PARALLEL STUDIO designed a lightweight, climate-responsive pavilion that leverages its physical constraints to solve complex environmental challenges. The building operates as an open-ended, human-scaled refuge that blurs the traditional threshold between interior shelter and the surrounding natural world.

The completion of the Shenzhen Bay Culture Square by MAD Architects marks a pivotal moment in contemporary architecture, showcasing a profound synthesis of cultural identity, innovative design, and urban integration. As reported by Designboom, after eight years of meticulous design and development, MAD Architects has brought to life a 188,000-square-meter coastal museum complex situated along the edge of Shenzhen's Houhai district. Resting on reclaimed land facing Hong Kong, where the city’s headquarters district merges with Talent Park and expansive mangrove wetlands, the project redefines the relationship between built forms, public space, and the natural coastline.

Beyond Sportswear: The Architecture of Active Recovery

Images by Nike and Hyperice

Images source: About Nike

For decades, the sportswear industry measured innovation almost exclusively by what happened during the game: faster sprint times, higher vertical jumps, and lighter materials built for peak exertion. However, a seismic shift in athletic design thinking is redefining how we view performance. True athletic potential is no longer just about the output of energy, it is dictated by the efficiency of recovery.

This philosophy is at the core of the Nike Air Zoom Hyperslide, a revolutionary piece of wellness technology born from an elite collaboration between Nike and Hyperice. By bridging the gap between performance footwear and physiological care, this project marks a transition from passive apparel design to active, solution-based engineering.

What Africa Can Learn From Global AI Megadeals and Data Sovereignty

Two major global projects reported by Construction Review show how fast digital infrastructure is evolving:

1. The 10-Gigawatt AI Megaproject in Ohio: SoftBank’s SB Energy and OpenAI are building the $500B+ PORTS Technology Campus in Piketon, Ohio, backed by a staggering $250 billion financing guarantee from Nvidia.
2. TikTok’s Project Clover in Finland: ByteDance is pouring over €12 billion into European data centers, including a €1B, 100MW campus in Kouvola, to guarantee data sovereignty and local privacy compliance for 200 million users.

While these multi-billion-dollar hubs are being built in North America and Europe, they carry vital lessons for Africa’s economic future. As the youngest, fastest-growing digital population on Earth, Africa stands at a crossroads: it can either remain a consumer of foreign digital pipelines or build its own sovereign infrastructure.
