There is an 80% chance of the warming El Nino phenomenon developing between June and August, increasing the risk of extreme weather events, the World Meteorological Organization said earlier today.

There is an 80-per cent chance of the warming El Nino phenomenon developing between June and August, increasing the risk of extreme weather events, the World Meteorological Organization said earlier today.

“Fuelled by unusually warm ocean waters in the tropical Pacific, El Nino conditions are developing and are set to influence global temperature and rainfall patterns,” the United Nations’ WMO weather and climate agency said.

Forecasts from the WMO global network “indicate a pronounced shift toward El Nino conditions, with probabilities reaching 80 percent for June-August”, the Geneva-based organisation said.

El Nino is a natural climate phenomenon that warms surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, bringing worldwide changes in winds, pressure and rainfall patterns.

It typically takes place every two to seven years and lasts around nine to 12 months.

Conditions oscillate between El Nino and its opposite La Nina, with neutral conditions in between.

Serena Williams confirmed her return to tennis after an absence of nearly four years. It was announced earlier today that the American great is set to play women’s doubles at Queen’s Club later this month.
The 44-year-old, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, has not played since a third-round loss at the 2022 US Open.
The former world number one posted the message, “Good news travels fast” along with a video of her on court in an all-white Nike tennis dress and with her phone buzzing rapidly in the background.
Her imminent return has been touted since it was revealed in December she had re-entered the anti-doping programme — a prerequisite to play on the tour again.
She has been given a wild card for the women’s doubles at Queen’s in London, reportedly alongside young Canadian Victoria Mboko.

As the Muslim community observes Eid-ul-Adha, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has extended greetings, highlighting the themes of faith, sacrifice, and compassion. She referenced the example of Prophet Ibrahim, the spirit of Qurbani and charity, and extended prayers for Hajj pilgrims, wishing all a blessed Eid Mubarak.

MESSAGE OF PRIME MINISTER THE HONOURABLE MRS KAMLA PERSAD-BISSESSAR, SC, MP, ON THE OBSERVANCE OF EID UL-ADHA 2026

As Muslims locally and around the world observe the sacred festival of Eid-ul-Adha, I extend heartfelt greetings and sincere wishes for a peaceful and blessed celebration.

In Islam, there are two Eids: Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr. Eid-ul-Adha is regarded as the greater of the two. It marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage and is a sacred time of prayer, reflection, sacrifice, gratitude, and renewal of faith.

At the heart of Eid-ul-Adha is the story of the Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismael, in obedience to Almighty Allah’s command. That powerful example of faith and devotion continues to inspire believers across generations.

It reminds us that faith is demonstrated not only through words but through sacrifice, humility, compassion, selflessness, and service to others. As the Holy Qur’an reminds us:

“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him.” (Qur’an 22:37)

That message reflects the true spirit of Eid-ul-Adha. It reminds us that sincerity of faith, purity of intention, and compassion towards others are among the highest virtues to which humanity can aspire.

Across Trinidad and Tobago, Muslims will gather at Masjids and in their homes for prayer and fellowship. Many will participate in the sacred tradition of Qurbani in honour of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to God, reflecting the values of faith, sacrifice, devotion, and generosity.

The sharing of food and support with relatives, neighbours, friends, and those in need reflects the enduring values of charity, community, and social solidarity that continue to strengthen our nation.

These same values are also reflected in the sacred pilgrimage of Hajj. I therefore extend prayers and best wishes to all pilgrims from Trinidad and Tobago who journeyed to the Holy City of Mecca this year.

Hajj is not merely a physical journey across borders. It is a profound spiritual journey marked by humility, devotion, endurance, and submission to the will of Almighty Allah. Hajj is also regarded as one of the fundamental pillars of Islam.

Even as Eid-ul-Adha is observed in joy and thanksgiving, many people across the world continue to endure hardship and uncertainty. This sacred festival, therefore, also reminds us of the importance of peace, compassion, human dignity, and our shared responsibility to care for one another.

On behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, I extend sincere Eid-ul-Adha greetings to the Muslim community on this holy occasion.
May Allah accept your sacrifices and prayers, and fill your homes with peace, happiness, and barakah.
Eid Mubarak and Hajj Mabrour.

END.

Ferrari has presented its first fully electric car, marking a high-stakes shift by the luxury sports car maker as competitors including Porsche and Lamborghini scale back their EV ambitions, citing weak demand.
The four-door Luce, Italian for ‘light’, was developed with the help of former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his collective LoveFrom, and is Ferrari’s first five-seater.
Ferrari aims to appeal to families with deep pockets, offering them comfortable seats, high-end tech and a 600-liter trunk. Deliveries of the long-awaited Luce, priced at US$640,000 are due to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
