Early Days (1992-2000s):

1992: Skin & Ink was founded as a monthly tattoo magazine. This was a time when tattooing was still emerging from the shadows of counterculture and entering the mai

nstream. The magazine aimed to showcase the artistic side of tattooing, moving beyond the stereotypes and showcasing it as a legitimate art form. Focus on Art: From the outset, Skin & Ink differentiated itself by focusing squarely on the artistic merit of tattooing. It featured both established and emerging artists, presenting a diverse range of styles and techniques to a growing audience. Print Distribution: The magazine built its readership through strong print distribution. It secured placement in major bookstore chains like Barnes & Noble and Hastings, as well as art stores, boutiques, and newsstands. This wide distribution helped solidify its position within the industry. Evolution and Challenges (2000s-2010s):

Digital Age: Like many print publications, Skin & Ink faced challenges with the rise of digital media. The internet offered new avenues for tattoo artists to showcase their work and connect with clients, potentially diminishing the need for print magazines. Adapting to Change: In response, Skin & Ink likely adjusted its publishing schedule, shifting from monthly to quarterly to remain sustainable. They also embraced digital platforms, establishing an online presence to reach a wider audience. Maintaining Relevance: The magazine likely continued to evolve its content, focusing on in-depth artist profiles, coverage of tattoo conventions and events, and exploration of new trends and techniques in the industry. Present Day:

Bi-Quarterly Publication: Skin & Ink continues to publish a bi-quarterly print magazine, offering high-quality, full-color issues printed on premium paper. This likely caters to a dedicated readership who appreciate the tactile experience and in-depth articles. Digital Presence: The magazine maintains a website and social media presence, providing online content and promoting the print edition. They may also offer digital subscriptions or online archives. Commitment to the Art: Skin & Ink remains committed to its original mission of highlighting the artistry of tattooing. It likely features a mix of established and up-and-coming artists, showcasing diverse styles and celebrating the creative spirit of the industry. Key to Success:

Skin & Ink's longevity can be attributed to several factors:

Early adoption and strong print distribution: Establishing a foothold in the market when tattooing was gaining mainstream popularity. Consistent focus on the art form: Prioritizing quality photography and insightful articles that celebrate tattooing as a true art form. Adaptability to the changing media landscape: Embracing digital platforms while maintaining a core print publication. Skin & Ink Magazine has undoubtedly played a significant role in documenting and promoting the evolution of tattoo art. It serves as a valuable resource for both artists and enthusiasts, capturing the creativity and passion that drive the industry.

Some artists follow trends. Some artists create the things the rest of the industry chases five years later.

That’s who we’re looking for.

Skin & Ink Magazine is officially opening submissions for upcoming 2026/2027 features and we want to see the artists who are pushing tattooing forward instead of repeating what already exists. Black and grey… color realism… surrealism… biomech… neo traditional… illustrative… experimental… we don’t care about fitting inside a box. We care about vision. We care about identity. We care about work that actually makes people stop scrolling.

For over 30 years Skin & Ink has documented the evolution of tattoo culture and spotlighted artists from around the world who are shaping the future of this industry. If your work deserves a larger stage… now’s your shot.

Follow, collab, and tag and so our editorial team can see your work.
(Bonus points if you share this and help get the word out!)

Let’s find the next wave of tattoo history together.

Skin & Ink Magazine is officially sponsoring the Punk Rock Tattoo Expo in Las Vegas… hosted by the Punk Rock Museum… June 20th - 21st… where music, ink, and culture collide exactly the way they’re supposed to… raw, loud, and unapologetically real.

Tattooing and punk rock have always shared the same heartbeat… built in the margins, fueled by rebellion, and carried by people who refused to ask for permission. One lives in sound, the other in skin… but both speak the same language… identity isn’t given… it’s carved out.

From basement shows to backroom shops, these worlds didn’t just cross paths… they built each other. What you wear, what you play, what you ink… it all becomes a flag in the ground that says this is who I am… take it or leave it.
