Artie Shaw was no avant‑garde tornado (he didn’t need feedback loops, multiphonics or 40‑minute cosmic explorations). But let’s be honest: the man’s technique, imagination and sheer velocity were so outrageous that quite a few free jazz warriors would think twice before trying to keep up with him. Shaw swung so hard he practically bent spacetime.

In the early 1990s, jazz scholar — and former Oregon State Senator — Ted Hallock spent an entire week recording long, candid, deeply insightful conversations with Shaw. The result was a 13‑part radio biography, “The Mystery of Artie Shaw,” which aired on public radio… and then quietly vanished.

Today, thanks to a collaboration between the Ted Hallock Estate, Larry Slater of Jazz Connections, and All About Jazz, this remarkable archival series is back. Fully restored. Fully available. And fully mesmerizing.
