Not Two Records (NotTwo)

Not Two Records (NotTwo) Since around 2002, the label has recorded almost exclusively avant-garde music — and built one of the most adventurous catalogs in creative music anywhere.

Not Two Records is a free‑jazz and avant‑garde label devoted to raw, unfiltered live recordings and artist‑driven releases, capturing boundary‑breaking improvisation with honesty, intensity, and a deep commitment to creative freedom. Founded in Kraków, Poland in 1998, Not Two Records began by releasing straight-ahead sessions by Polish musicians before its focus shifted toward a more open aestheti

c. A host of significant contemporary players have graced the Not Two catalog, including David Murray, Ken Vandermark, Sonny Simmons, Michael Marcus, Daniel Carter, Gebhard Ullmann, Steve Swell, Sirone, Anthony Braxton, ROVA, Szilárd Mezei, Satoko Fujii, Joe Morris, Mats Gustafsson, Barry Guy, Joëlle Léandre, Joe McPhee, Rodrigo Amado, and Peter Brötzmann — alongside the most progressive voices of the Polish improvised-music scene. Not Two releases have long been treasured as objects in their own right: lavish five-inch gatefold cardboard sleeves, laminated and finished with crisp, often abstract graphics. Inspired by Japanese CD design yet wholly distinct, they remain some of the most striking packages in the music. Now the label is entering a new chapter. After nearly three decades in Kraków, Not Two has relocated to the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California, with founder Marek Winiarski passing the torch to longtime executive producer Cezary Lerski. The complete catalog of nearly 350 releases is being brought online, with most titles also available to stream and buy on Bandcamp. The philosophy that built the label hasn't changed. As Marek Winiarski once put it: "My philosophy is very simple. I want to release music that I really like, even if I know from the very beginning that I'll lose money. Mixing musicians from various countries and traditions is especially important — there's always a chance to get great results." The geography has changed. The mission has not. The signal carries on.

All About Jazz just reviewed One Voice — and it's a beautiful piece of writing.

Critic Mark Corroto traces Not Two Records' 25-year lineage back to ESP-Disk and Impulse!, and calls this first compilation in our new four-volume series "a portrait of a label that has consistently trusted artists to speak in their own unmistakable voices."

Eleven solo voices — Simon Rose, Per-Åke Holmlander, Ken Vandermark, Szilárd Mezei, Joe Giardullo, Kjell Nordeson, John Purcell, Barry Guy, Dominic Duval, Marcin Oleś, and Bartłomiej "Brat" Oleś — each given the floor, one instrument at a time.

New Release: "Two Truths" — Thirteen Duets, One Nonduality
https://nottworecords.org/mw002.html
13 duets. 2001–2020. Two musicians only — no ensemble to hide behind, no third voice to blur the edge. For new fans, it's a way into the label's history through its most exposed, most concentrated form. For longtime listeners, it's a re-hearing — familiar names stripped down to a single conversation, dialogue, confrontation, or shared silence. Not one, not two: the label's name made audible, one duet at a time.

A LANDMARK IN POLISH JAZZ HISTORY IS BACK.
Live in Sofia — the very first CD ever released on the label — captures a remarkable 1998 concert by Leszek Możdżer and Adam Pierończyk, two giants of contemporary Polish jazz at a formative moment in their artistic paths. Their dialogue is intimate, searching, playful, and at times almost spiritual. Piano and saxophone trade roles, ideas, and colors with a freedom that still feels fresh today.
