Benjamin Zuckerman and Patrick Palmer used the 300-foot radio telescope to check hundreds of nearby Sun-like stars. They tuned around the 21-centimeter hydrogen line, a frequency scientists thought another civilization might choose because hydrogen is everywhere.

The observing ran through the early 1970s, and the 1978 results were plain: about 674 stars surveyed, no confirmed artificial signal found.

That quiet answer was still a big deal. Ozma II showed SETI could be a real observing program, star by star, not a one-night gamble.

The tale starts in 1938, in the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains near the China-Tibet border, where a Chinese professor named Chi Pu Tei was said to find cave burials, small skeletons, and hundreds of stone discs.

Years later, a researcher named Tsum Um Nui was said to read the spiral markings and pull out a wild message: the Dropa, beings from the stars, crashed there 12,000 years ago and couldn't get home.

That story raced through UFO books.

But the record bends hard. The named professors and institutions don't check out, no verified museum record for the discs surfaced, and famous photos point to ordinary Chinese bi discs.

Lights were crossing Arctic Sweden at night when flying there seemed ridiculous.

In the winter of 1933-34, newspapers across Sweden filled with “ghost flyer” stories. Farmers, police, soldiers, and lighthouse keepers described aircraft-like lights over Norrland and Lapland, often in snow, darkness, and brutal cold.

Some people said they heard engines. Others saw beams sweeping the ground, like a pilot searching below. The sightings spilled into Norway and Finland, and Sweden’s military took it seriously enough to collect reports and send patrols looking.

The obvious fear was foreign aircraft sneaking over the north, maybe scouting or smuggling. But the record never gave Sweden a captured plane, a proven pilot, or a clean answer.

Investigators sorted some sightings into stars, meteors, weather, and normal aircraft. Plenty stayed too messy to pin down.
