Some plants circle their own roots so tightly they can’t absorb water anymore.

You can pour all you want. Nothing gets in.

I found a few like that this weekend while I was repotting. Roots knotted so tight around themselves it was a wonder they were still alive.

And I couldn’t help but think about the places we do the same thing. Circling. Stuck. Standing in soil that ran out of what we needed a long time ago.

I ate cake out of a stranger’s hand.

It was a rainy Friday night. The football game had been delayed, so we ended up in a Starbucks.

What we knew was that we were waiting on a storm, waiting for a final call on the game. What we couldn’t know was that we’d end up celebrating a birthday with a stranger.

Most people would have looked away. I looked at her and said, how can you look so sad with such a beautiful cake in front of you?

Ten minutes later we were singing happy birthday to a stranger.

Growth changes what you are willing to tolerate.

Not because you suddenly think you’re better than everyone.

Not because you’ve stopped caring.

Not because you’ve become difficult.

Because you finally started listening to yourself.

There comes a point when the things you used to explain away, excuse, tolerate, or quietly endure just don’t fit anymore.

The boundary you used to feel guilty about?
You hold it.

The standard you used to compromise?
You keep it.

And yes, people will notice.

They may tell you that you’ve changed.
They may call you difficult.

Let them believe what they want.

You can have a soft heart and a firm backbone.

You already know how to curate a feed.

You mute what drains you. You search for what you want more of.

You train the algorithm until it hands you the reality you asked for.

Now do it with your life. The music, the shows, the people, the thoughts on repeat. Every one of them is a post you’re feeding the algorithm of who you’re becoming.

What if being in the right place at the wrong time is sometimes exactly how you end up where you’re supposed to be?

A couple months ago, I said yes to spending a Saturday with a friend at an art show.

We got there at the “wrong” time.

And somehow, while wandering around and following whatever caught our attention, I found myself standing inside a literal forge.

The funny part?

I had just created a podcast called Forged in the Dark.

I unknowingly created this experience.

Faith plants the seed. Habits are what build the consistency that lets it grow.

Everybody wants the bloom. Almost nobody wants the watering. The watering is the part no one claps for. The early morning and late nights you told no one about. The workout when your body said no. Showing up on the day you had every reason not to.

But that’s the whole thing. Nothing grows from the moment you choose to believe. It grows from the hundreds of quiet times you kept showing up for something you couldn’t see yet.

Faith is the seed. Habits are the water.

Keep showing up. The bloom is coming whether anyone’s watching or not.
