In this episode of Mythbound, I travel to Lake Champlain to investigate Champ, America’s legendary lake monster a creature that has reportedly been sighted hundreds of times for more than a century.

For generations, witnesses around Lake Champlain have described seeing something enormous moving beneath the water: long dark shapes, mysterious wakes, humps breaking the surface, and creatures they couldn’t explain. With more than 600 reported sightings, Champ has become one of the most enduring cryptid mysteries in North America.

I head onto the lake to investigate the stories for myself, trace some of Champ’s most famous sightings, speak with people who know the legend, and examine the evidence that has kept this mystery alive for decades.

But during our investigation, we were shown a sonar report, and talked to witnesses who have claimed to have seen it for themselves.

What we recorded doesn’t prove that Champ exists but after hearing the eyewitness accounts, studying the history, and seeing what happened during our own search, I understand why so many people remain convinced that something unexplained is living in Lake Champlain.

Is Champ simply a legend, a misidentified animal, or could there really be something beneath the surface?

“Bigfoot Clan Reported Near Mount Adams

Two photographs have been shared that are claimed to show Bigfoot in the remote wilderness around Mount Adams, Washington.

The area is vast, heavily forested and difficult to access, making it a location where reports of Sasquatch have continued for decades. Some researchers believe the sightings could involve more than one individual, with the possibility of a small family or group living deep in the forest.

🌊 Something enormous was said to be lurking beneath the waters of Vietnam...

The Con Rit is one of Southeast Asia’s strangest reported sea monsters, described as a gigantic, segmented creature resembling an enormous marine centipede.

Stories associated with the Gulf of Tonkin describe a long, heavily armoured body made up of numerous jointed segments, giving it an appearance unlike any recognised sea serpent.

French naturalist Dr A. Krempf recorded an account in the early 20th century involving a large unidentified marine animal reportedly encountered off the Vietnamese coast. Such reports later became associated with the creature known as Con Rit.

Was it an unknown species, a badly identified marine animal, or simply a sailor’s tale that grew with every retelling?

Whatever the truth, the idea of a giant armoured creature moving beneath the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin remains one of Vietnam’s most fascinating cryptid legends.

Deep in the rivers and coastal marshes of Georgia, something strange is said to move beneath the dark water.

The Altamaha-ha, often called “Altie”, is Georgia’s legendary river monster, a mysterious creature associated with the Altamaha River and the waterways around Darien.

Witnesses have described a long, serpentine animal with a powerful body, flippers, and a head sometimes resembling that of a seal or crocodile.

Stories of unusual creatures in the region stretch back generations, while modern sightings helped turn Altie into one of America’s better-known cryptids.

Reports often describe something large surfacing briefly, creating an unusual wake, then disappearing beneath the murky water before anyone can get a clear look.

Sceptics suggest misidentified alligators, large fish, manatees or floating debris could explain some encounters. Yet the legend refuses to disappear.

Could an unknown animal really be hiding in Georgia’s vast river system, or is the Altamaha-ha simply a monster created by folklore, mistaken sightings and imagination?

Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum’s passing has left a quiet emptiness that is difficult to put into words. I still find it hard to accept that he is gone.

Jeff was far more than a respected speaker at my events. He was a trusted colleague, a personal friend, and one of the most important and influential figures in the serious study of Sasquatch. He brought credibility, scientific discipline, and an open yet critical mind to a subject too often dismissed without examination.

Over nearly two decades, I was honored to host Jeff nine times:

One of my most treasured memories comes from the 2006 Bigfoot in Texas? exhibit, when Jeff presented me with the author’s proof of his landmark book, Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science. Inside, he wrote:

That book remains the most treasured item in my Sasquatch collection—not merely because of its rarity or importance, but because Jeff personally inscribed it and placed it in my hands during such a memorable moment in our shared history.

Whenever Jeff appeared at one of my events, he generously shared his knowledge, research, and enthusiasm with our audiences. His presentations encouraged people to think more deeply, examine the evidence carefully, and approach the mystery with both curiosity and intellectual honesty. He had a rare ability to bring scientific rigor to the subject without losing sight of the wonder that drew so many of us to it in the first place.

Beyond his professional contributions, I will always treasure the conversations, laughter, and memories we shared over the years. His absence leaves an enormous void—not only in the field of Bigfoot research, but also in the lives of those fortunate enough to know him personally.

Jeff’s work will continue to guide the field, and his influence will endure in the many people he encouraged to look more carefully and think more deeply. I am grateful that our paths crossed and deeply honored to have called him my friend.

Rest in peace, Jeff. You will be remembered with gratitude, respect, and affection.
