Before the Tuskegee Airmen made history, Eugene Jacques Bullard was already breaking barriers in the skies.

During World War I, Bullard became the first Black American combat pilot, flying missions for France in 1917. Despite his courage and experience, racial discrimination prevented him from flying for the United States.

Bullard’s remarkable life stretched far beyond aviation—he served as a soldier, boxer, nightclub owner, and even aided France during World War II. His contributions went largely unrecognized in the United States during his lifetime.

His story is a reminder that Black history is filled with pioneers whose accomplishments deserve to be remembered.
