⚰️ THE MAN THEY FEARED—EVEN AFTER DEATH ⚰️
James Armstrong was no ordinary prisoner.
Sentenced to ten years for burglary at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Cañon City, authorities soon discovered that “James Armstrong” may have actually been James Young—a wanted fugitive suspected of taking part in the murder of Gee Jam, a Chinese gardener in Ogden, Utah.
Armstrong was described as one of the most desperate and resourceful criminals in the West. He attempted to escape multiple times, helped lead the penitentiary revolt of June 22, 1903, and was reportedly wanted by authorities across several western states.
Then, during the night of August 18, 1903, Armstrong made his final escape.
After tearing into the ceiling of his cell, he pulled down several feet of electrical wire. He created a dummy beneath his blankets, covered the damaged ceiling with white cloth and hid behind his bed. Using the wire, Armstrong deliberately strangled himself. A guard discovered his body shortly after midnight—but it was already too late.
That is where history ends…and the legend begins. 👻
Armstrong was reportedly so violent that he once bit a nurse in the throat. Before his death, he allegedly vowed that once he was gone, he would finally be free—a terrifying promise to the prison officials who feared him.
According to local legend, a superstitious warden refused to take that chance.
When Armstrong was buried, his heavy steel cell door was supposedly placed over his coffin, trapping him beneath the ground so his spirit could never escape and return to haunt the living. Years later, a metal detector reportedly confirmed that a large metal object still lies beneath his grave.
The newspapers confirm Armstrong’s criminal past, escape attempts, prison revolt and gruesome death. But the cell door buried over his coffin remains part of Cañon City’s darker folklore.
