For our final show of the year, we sat down with Yuan Wang, outgoing Executive Director of Lavender Phoenix (LavNix), and Tina Shauf-Bajar, incoming Executive Director.

LavNix is a Bay Area–based nonprofit supporting q***r & trans Asian and Pacific Islander youth, and a proud member of AACRE (Asian Americans for Civil Rights and Equality).

Together, they reflected on LavNix’s history, the powerful intersections of immigrant and q***r justice, and what it means to build community-led movements in this moment. They also shared thoughts on leadership transition, resilience, and the work ahead.

Please join us for this event which features speakers from our last few APEX Express episodes that aired on KPFA Radio!

We’re so honored to be in conversation with these powerful leaders at We Belong Here: Bhutanese & HMoob Americans in the Struggle Against Statelessness -- a virtual community event this Monday, Nov 3 at 4PM PT / 7PM ET!

During the event, we’ll hear from State Representative Mai Xiong and State Representative Abdullahi, who will share updates on the growing number of Bhutanese, HMoob, and Southeast Asian community members being detained in their states (Michigan and Ohio respectively).

We're also going to be uplifting two ongoing campaigns, one to which centers Lue Yang, a Hmong community leader from Michigan, and another to Free Mohan Karki, a Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugee from Ohio.

You’ll hear directly from their wives, Ann Vue and Tika Basnet, who continue to fight for their husband's return and for all refugee communities facing deportation.

The program will be hosted by Miko Lee and feature Aisa Villarosa Asian Law Caucus who will break down the legal implications of these detentions and what’s at stake for Asian immigrant communities nationwide. Attendees will also gain tools and resources, including Know Your Rights, FOIA Requests, and tips for staying safe at election polls this November.
