Instagram shared new guidance this week on what makes a caption work, and it's more useful than the usual advice.

A few things stood out. Only the first two lines show before someone has to tap "more," so the hook has to be right at the top. Instagram also uses the words in your caption to understand what your post is about and to surface it in search, so describing your post plainly beats being clever. Adding a caption to each carousel image helps too.

They were direct about calls to action as well: tell people what to do next instead of hoping they figure it out.

If you post for your business, this is a quick win. Same photo, better caption, more people find it.

A heads up for anyone running Facebook or Instagram ads.

Meta is removing the placements setting, the one that lets you choose which apps and formats your ads show up in. Ad experts spotted the change last week. No firm date yet, but Meta has told some advertisers it's coming.

From here, Meta's system picks the placements for you. Your ad could land in a vertical Reel, the regular feed, Stories, or Marketplace, and you don't get to opt out.

Practically, that means your creative has to work in every shape. A wide photo with small text will get cropped and lost.

If you're running ads, this is the week to check how yours holds up vertically.

Here's a shift worth knowing about.

More people are asking Google's AI to find them a plumber, a restaurant, a roofer. A new study looked at almost 15,000 of those AI answers across 50 U.S. cities to see where the recommendations came from.

Business websites were cited nearly 60% of the time, more than review sites and directories combined. Reddit came in second. Angi and Thumbtack trailed well behind.

The takeaway for a small business: your own website is doing more heavy lifting than it used to. If it's slow, thin on detail, or hasn't been updated in years, the AI has nothing good to pull from.

Worth an hour this week just reading your site the way a customer would.

Running a marketing studio means there's always something exciting to work on next. This weekend we let it wait. Lake sunsets, a movie on the side of the camper, the kids learning how to build a fire, and a dog who claimed the best rock. Can't wait to get back at it tomorrow, but it was nice to take it slow for a couple days.
