AITA for getting frustrated with my husband over his spending?
My husband and I are currently living on a pretty tight budget. We're basically paycheck to paycheck, and we've had some serious problems with debt in the past, so we've agreed not to use credit cards anymore.
We've talked about our finances several times, and as far as I know, we're both on the same page about sticking to our budget.
The problem is that whenever my husband goes shopping with our kids, he almost always comes home with a bunch of things we didn't plan to buy.
I'm not against treating the kids occasionally. I actually think it's nice to let them pick out a snack or a small treat every once in a while. But with him, it happens almost every single time they go to the store.
Sometimes he'll buy extra snacks for himself too.
When I take the kids shopping, I'm apparently the "mean parent" because I usually tell them no when they ask for random things. I do that because I'm constantly trying to make sure we spend as little as possible and stay within the amount we've budgeted.
I've brought this up with my husband several times recently, but instead of taking it seriously, he gets irritated and says things like, "It was only a couple of extra things," or, "They weren't even expensive."
That's not really the point.
Even if each individual purchase is cheap, they add up.
The frustrating part is that he'll spend more than we planned early in the pay period, and then a week or so before his next paycheck, I'm sitting at home stressing because we don't have enough money left for groceries.
I'm the one looking at what we have left and trying to decide which groceries are absolutely necessary and which ones we can live without until payday.
Sometimes I'm literally calculating, "Okay, we have this much for gas, this much for food, this bill needs to be paid, and we'll have maybe $25 left until payday."
It's incredibly stressful.
Meanwhile, my husband seems to think I'm making a big deal out of nothing because each individual purchase was small.
I don't want our kids to grow up never getting treats, and I don't want to be the parent who always says no. But I also don't want to constantly worry about whether we'll have enough money for necessities because my husband wanted to buy a few extra things at the store.
I've tried explaining that this isn't really about the kids getting snacks. It's about us agreeing on a budget and then one of us repeatedly spending outside of it.
AITA for being frustrated with my husband about this, or am I overreacting?
