RAR 235 | MORTWIGHT - THE SWORD SHALL DEVOUR FOREVER
“The Sword Shall Devour Forever” is the newest full-length release from Denton, Texas martial ambient artist, Mortwight. “The Sword Shall Devour Forever” expands upon the industrial-tinged dungeon synth sound explored in 2024’s “Militant Melancholia” with four long-form forays into blighted war-torn landscapes and rust-laden despair. Drawing influence from the darkest depths of dungeon synth, the droning soundscapes of the gold era of Cold Meat Industry dark ambient artists, and the grandeur of post-rock, Mortwight conjures towering columns of Stygian sound on an endless march to oblivion over the course of the record.
Thematically, The Sword Shall Devour Forever dwells on the precarity of hope in the shadow of great catastrophe. Mortwight’s creator, M., says the album, “attempts to aurally deliver upon the promise inherent in the slogan anti-heroic martial ambient. ‘The Sword Shall Devour Forever’ is about the violent death throes of empires, present and historical. It looks in mourning to the past and in horror upon the present, where our own empire continues its own violent campaign against much of the world and against us at home. It might depart in this tone from the escapism of dungeon synth, but it is what it is, as is the world.”
The Sword Shall Devour Forever was written and recorded throughout 2025 and completed in early 2026. The album was mixed by Derek Rush (Chthonic Streams, Compactor, Dream into Dust) and mastered for vinyl by Grant Richardson (Hex Audio Labs). The cover photo was taken by Will Mecca with layout and design by Vincent Ciarlo. Vinyl will be available through the Realm and Ritual Bandcamp Store with digital downloads available from the Mortwight Bandcamp on August 28th.
