Do you know this elderberry imposter?

Comment “gather app” and I’ll send you a free month trial for my app shown in this reel!

TODAY at 3pm CT, I am dropping my first long-form video in a *very* long time. I have been thinking about this video, literally for years and years, and I’m so excited for you to finally be able to watch it!

In it, I debunk one of the most ubiquitous myths in all of foraging about elderberries and cyanide, in addition to showing uncommon techniques and practices that will get you gallons and gallons of wild elderberries every single year in a way that is both efficient and fun! (Like being able to sort out all the little stems in a matter of minutes, rather than hours)

I’ve poured hundreds of hours into my time with elderberry (Sambucus), and this video is my treatise on one of the greatest wild fruits this earth has to offer.

I hope you’ll get a chance to watch it. 🙏 You can catch it on my YT channel, just search for "Feral Foraging." Looking forward to seeing you there!

(P.S. As I predicted, it is indeed a 45 minute video, but if you’ve watched any of my long-form videos before, you know we don’t waste your time. Every moment is packed with valuable information. Sit down with a evening tea, relax, and enjoy the show!)

Pregaming The Feral Feast with the boys! So cool to spend time with fellow foragers on the land in Montana. Thank you Poldi Wieland | Year of Plenty for bringing us together and showing us around your spots. Got on some boletes and chanterelles. Found a nice patch of choke cherries urban foraging. I can’t speak highly enough about these men, brilliant, caring, leaders. The world needs more good men like these guys. Tim | Minnesota Forager Forage Colorado Feral Foraging. Also checkout this Japanese bbq dinner spread! You know how much I value food like this, wild game, foraged mushrooms, and super sacred special foraged sauces. 👨‍🍳🤤🤌🏼🥩🦌🍄‍🟫

This is one of the best treasures you can find in the woods.

Chanterelle season is in full swing across North America, and this has been an AMAZING year for them.

There is a reason they call this mushroom “forest gold”. They are delicious with a fruity, apricot-like aroma and a satisfying ‘meaty’ texture.

I’ve already collected more than my previous best year.

If you’ve been curious about getting into hunting wild edible mushrooms, right now is the perfect time to start!

Chanterelles (Cantharellus) are an amazing beginner mushroom.

They are incredibly easy to spot (just look at that color). They don’t go bad quickly, and they’re straightforward to distinguish from dangerous lookalikes.

The jack o’lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus) are the main ones you want to be aware of so you don't confuse them.

Thankfully, they’re really easy to distinguish. Chanterelles grow from the ground, singly or in scattered bunches. Jacks grow in clusters on wood or buried roots.

Chanterelles have a cream interior. Jacks have an orange interior.

We have more details in the full lookalike guide for these two in Gather, my foraging app.

The app will also tell you if Chanterelles grow in your area and their seasonal window, tailored to your specific location!

America! You should know this wild mushroom!

Comment “gather app” and I’ll send you a DM that will give you a free month-long trial to try out my foraging app to see when chanterelles (Cantharellus) will fruit near you!

Let me know if you’d like to see a more thorough video on identifying the red oak group.

As with most mushrooms in the world, these should be cooked before consuming.

This has been an amazing chanterelle season so far, and across much of the country, right now is an ideal time to be looking for them!

Have you found them before?

What is actually destroying thousands of ramps?

Imagine everyone stops foraging for ramps, only for garlic mustard to completely overtake their habitat and destroy them anyway.

We need MORE people foraging for ramps, building a deeply vested interest in their survival and success.

I hope you’ll join us!

Across much of North America, ramps are flowering RIGHT NOW! They’ll begin to go to seed from late August to early October (depending on the location).

To find out if they grow near you and when they flower, go to seed, or are ready for picking the greens/bulbs, you can use Gather, my foraging app! We’ll show you all of that info tailored to your exact location.

Use the link in my bio to get a free month-long trial.

I wanted to add more details to where I mention cutting the top part of the bulb and then replanting the bottom part.

There is a great study by the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Projects (FNE23-067) which found that this method works best with ‘later-stage’ plants (where the bulb has become more teardrop-shaped) and where at least 1/2in of the bulb is left attached to the roots.
