Will the circle be unbroken.

What words can though many shall be written on a tenor saxophone Legend who disavowed that labeling; who always said he was still working on it, still practicing, still trying to get better; to get closer to It.

If any reading this ain't yet, highest recommendation to full dig on record: The Bridge & East Broadway Run Down.

Later, I got intimate with Rollins' Freedom Suite; at the time David S. Ware interpolated that extended work on record, extending and exquisitely bringing it into the 21st century anew with his Quartet.

As a very young man, David introduced himself to Sonny, who graciously asked that he play for him. On hearing him play, Sonny took young David under his wing, playing together at his home for a spell.

Sonny taught David circular breathing technique in that time. That he had also begun including meditation as part of his daily practice would prove to be an elemental lifelong lesson as well.

The next life that Sonny Rollins' spirit inhabits will assuredly bring voluminous blessings to fellow sentients sharing that new life. Just as he did here on Earth; spanning centuries.

Guitarist-bassist-composer-improviser-writer-teacher Joe Morris is this year's opening night Lifetime Achievement Honoree. I have the highest opening night expectations as I've ever had in 30 years of being a part of this. Highest & deepest.

And Sunday evening a deep & wide feature assembly honoring Daniel Carter – profoundly beloved elder brother.

DoYeon Kim is a masterful performer on the gayageum, a traditional Korean silk-stringed zither.

channels history, literature, and an ever-evolving sense of the human spirit in a musical language entirely her own through original compositions, powerful solo performances, and collaborations with artists around the world.

She will be presenting two of these solo performances at Big Ears Festival this coming week — consider it a must to witness at least one of them if attending.

As her former NEC teacher, professor Joe Morris writes, “In Korea, like at NEC, I could see the way people respected DoYeon. She’s brilliant, a true soul and virtuoso who can do anything, and a tremendously focused performer.”
