🚨 YOUR CELLS CAN’T READ THE “SUGAR-FREE” LABEL. 🧠

Erythritol may not spike your blood sugar like regular sugar…

But does that automatically make it biologically irrelevant?

Not necessarily.

🔬 Recent laboratory research found that exposing cells involved in maintaining the blood-brain barrier to erythritol produced changes involving oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and other cellular processes.

That sounds alarming—but here’s the part social media headlines may leave out:

⚠️ This was cultured-cell research.

It does NOT prove that consuming erythritol causes brain damage in humans.

But it DOES raise questions worth investigating.

Because maybe we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Instead of only asking:

❌ “Does it spike my glucose?”

We should also be asking:

🧠 “What else might it be doing biologically?”

“Zero sugar” is a marketing claim.

Biology is more complicated.

🎙️ Watch Decoding Health as I break down the evolving science around erythritol, cellular health, the blood-brain barrier, and sugar substitutes.

👇 Do you use erythritol? Does this research make you think twice?

🧠🚨 YOUR BLOOD SUGAR MAY NOT SPIKE… BUT WHAT ELSE COULD BE HAPPENING?

Erythritol has become a go-to sugar substitute for people trying to reduce sugar and control glucose.

But “low glycemic” doesn’t mean “no biological effect.”

🔬 Recent University of Colorado laboratory research found that erythritol exposure altered functions in cells that help make up the blood-brain barrier.

That sounds alarming—but context matters.

⚠️ This was a cell-culture study, NOT a human clinical trial.

It does not prove erythritol causes brain damage, stroke, or neurodegenerative disease in people.

So why should you care?

Because it highlights something much bigger:

👉 Blood glucose is ONE biomarker. It isn’t the entire story of how an ingredient interacts with human biology.

On this Decoding Health Podcast episode, I unpack what this emerging research actually means—and where the headlines may be getting ahead of the science.

09/07/2026

IBJJF Masters Worlds is behind us.

Always an incredible experience to hang with teammates, compete against friends and take it all in.

This is a reason in itself to get your blue belt.

If you were to compete only once per year…this is the place you want to be.

🚨 KIDS MAY BE MORE CONNECTED THAN EVER… BUT ARE THEY LOSING CONNECTION TO THEIR OWN BODIES?

Think about childhood for a second.

Running. Jumping. Climbing. Balancing. Falling. Exploring. Figuring out where your body ends and the world begins.

Those weren’t necessarily just ways to burn energy.

They were experiences.

Experiences that can help develop coordination, spatial awareness, sensory processing, confidence, and real-world physical skills.

So here’s the uncomfortable question:

📱 Are modern childhood environments giving kids enough opportunities to physically explore their world?

Developmental differences are complex, and there’s no single explanation when a child struggles with body awareness or sensory and motor skills.

But that shouldn’t stop us from asking whether something important is changing.

🤯 TWO CHIROPRACTORS COULD SEE THE SAME PATIENT—AND TREAT THEM VERY DIFFERENTLY.

Why?

Because chiropractic isn’t one single technique or philosophy.

🎙️ On Decoding Health, Dr. Keith Lavender breaks down the different schools of chiropractic and explains why training, philosophy, clinical experience, and individual patient needs can shape how a chiropractor practices.

One approach that influenced his career is upper cervical chiropractic, which focuses particular attention on the upper neck and its relationship to the nervous system.

But here’s where the conversation gets interesting:

The profession includes different philosophies, techniques, and interpretations of the scientific evidence.

So when someone says, “I tried chiropractic…”

My next question might be:

👉 What kind?

🔥 AT 52, I’M NOT TRAINING TO PROVE I’M STILL YOUNG. I’M TRAINING SO I DON’T GROW OLD BEFORE I HAVE TO.

This Masters Worlds meant more to me than another competition.

I stepped back onto the mat as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt for the first time at Masters Worlds in three years—and after recovering from two surgeries.

Why keep doing this at 52?

Because BJJ gives me something to train for.

🥋 A reason to set physical goals.
đź’Ş A reason to protect muscle and strength.
🔥 A reason to prioritize my metabolic health.
🎯 A reason to keep testing what my body is capable of.

At this stage of life, I define winning differently.

Winning is being able to show up.

Winning is having the metabolic health, strength, mobility, and energy to keep doing the things I love.

And I have no intention of becoming a spectator in my own life.

52 isn’t my excuse to slow down. It’s my motivation to keep going.

👉 Follow me for more practical metabolic health solutions and strategies for staying active as we age.

🚨 YOUR PHONE CAN CONNECT YOU TO THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE—AND STILL LEAVE YOU MISSING SOMETHING.

Maybe the problem isn’t technology.

Maybe it’s that the bridge became the destination.

📱 Texting
đź’¬ DMs
❤️ Likes
🎥 Video calls
🌎 Online communities

These tools can create incredible connections.

But they can’t completely replicate sitting across from someone, sharing a meal, laughing together, having an uninterrupted conversation, or simply being present in the same place.

Technology should help bring people together—not automatically replace the experience of being together.

🔥 Your screen should be the bridge, not the destination.

In this new Decoding Health episode, Geoff McLachlan and I explore screens, play, relationships, and why real-world human connection still matters.

👇 What do you think: Are we becoming more connected—or just more digitally connected?

🚨 THE BEST WEIGHT CUT MIGHT BE THE ONE YOU DON’T HAVE TO MAKE.

Hours before Masters Worlds, I’m hydrated, fueled, on weight—and sticking with the same protocol that got me here. 🥋🔥

No panic.

No drastic last-minute changes.

No unnecessary dehydration.

This is my LAST POST before I compete, and there’s one message I want other Masters athletes to remember:

⚖️ Making weight and being ready to perform are NOT the same thing.

A well-designed competition protocol starts early enough that you aren’t forced to choose between the number on the scale and how you feel on the mats.

My morning photo showed me exactly what I needed to know:

âś… Weight managed
đź’§ Hydration maintained
🥩 Nutrition consistent
🎯 Protocol followed

Now it’s time to trust the preparation and compete.

🥋 Want to be better prepared next competition season?

Connect with me or DM me “MASTERS” and let’s talk about building your strategy BEFORE tournament week arrives.

THE ALZHEIMER’S SYMPTOM FAMILIES MAY NEVER SEE COMING. 💔🧠

Everyone expects the memory loss.

What families may not expect is watching someone they love begin to talk differently, behave differently, or even seem like a different person.

Dr. Micah Olson opens up about his own family’s experience with Alzheimer’s and the devastating behavioral and personality changes that can accompany disease progression.

When someone you’ve known your entire life suddenly says or does things that seem completely out of character, it can be confusing, painful, and incredibly difficult for caregivers to process.

This is the side of Alzheimer’s we need to talk about.
