A child’s digital footprint can last far longer than a childhood photo or milestone post. Names, faces, school information, locations, activities, and personal details shared online may be copied, stored, analyzed, and difficult to remove later.
Families can take practical steps to reduce long-term exposure:
• Limit identifying details in captions, photos, and public profiles.
• Review privacy settings regularly and check who can view, save, or share posts.
• Ask schools, youth organizations, and apps what information they collect, how it is used, and how long it is retained.
• Avoid posting real-time locations, daily routines, school names, or identifying uniforms and signs.
• Include children in age-appropriate conversations about consent, boundaries, and what should remain private.
• Review older posts and remove information that no longer needs to be public.
Protecting children online is not about fear. It is about making deliberate decisions before personal information becomes permanent.
