Happy Feast Day to Pope Saint Damasus I!

This is the beautiful epitaph he wrote for his own grave,

“He who walking on the sea could calm the bitter waves, who gives life to the dying seeds of the earth; He who was able to loose the mortal chains of death, and after three days’ darkness could bring again to the upper world the brother of his sister Martha: He, I believe, will make Damasus rise again from the dust.”

A message from Fr. David Konderla's homily this past Sunday:

"Today I spent part of the afternoon with a group of 5 couples, all of whom were here with me in the late 90s.... It was so fun to be with them because they're not very far from where you are. They were sitting in the pews where you're sitting right now, 15 years ago. And now to see them 15 years out from this experience, still listening for the voice of the Lord in their family, in their own hearts, still building each other up in love as a small group of friends, striving to grow in faith together.

"This is the message that God has for all of us. This is the life that God desires for all of us. That we would live as his disciples and because of the way we live, others would see and be drawn to Him as well."

From Fr. David's homily on Sunday:

"God is desiring this kind of a response from us. Not that we go off and wear leather belts and start eating grasshoppers - for one thing they're hard to find, you can't get very many of them... we'd all be very skinny. God is desiring that we live our lives with a heart that is open to his voice.

"So think about that. In our daily life we live in such a fashion that we are sensitive to and attentive to God at work in people around us and the cirumstances around us and the world around us. So that should God speak to us, we would be ready to hear and wanting to hear and wanting to be his partner in spreading the Good News of the Gospel."

Some words from Pope Saint John Paul II's canonization homily of St. Juan Diego, whose feast day we celebrate today:

“In accepting the Christian message without forgoing his indigenous identity, Juan Diego discovered the profound truth of the new humanity, in which all are called to be children of God. Thus he facilitated the fruit meeting of two worlds and became the catalyst for the new Mexican identity, closely united to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose mestizo face expresses her spiritual motherhood which embraces all Mexicans. That is why the witness of his life must continue to be the inspiration for the building up of the Mexican nation, encouraging brotherhood among all its children and ever helping to reconcile Mexico with its origins, values and traditions.”

On December 9, 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared to St. Juan Diego. Happy Feast Day St. Juan Diego!

Can you name the artist?

"Who breaks the power of sin and darkness
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger
The King of Glory, the King above all kings

Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder
And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder
The King of Glory, the King above all kings"

"This woman of faith, Mary of Nazareth, the Mother of God, has been given to us as a model in our pilgrimage of faith. From Mary we learn to surrender to God's will in all things. From Mary, we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary, we learn to love Christ, her Son and the Son of God."
-Pope Saint John Paul II

In today's gospel, Jesus heals two blind men.

“Do you believe that I can do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they said to him.
Then he touched their eyes and said,
“Let it be done for you according to your faith.”
And their eyes were opened.

What would you say if Jesus asked you that same question?

Today is the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria. A convert to Christianity herself, she converted hundreds more, including the emperor Maxentius's soldiers and even his wife (all of whom were martyred). When Catherine was sentenced to death herself, the spiked wheel that was to be used shattered upon her touch. She was then beheaded.

St. Catherine of Alexandria was one of the voices heard by St. Joan of Arc.

"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
her whole livelihood."
