Our last sketchbook assignment for my Independent Study students was to recreate a masterpiece.

There’s more than one way to make art and the students are finally starting to grasp that their talents are not limited to a page.

From sculpture to photography, graphic design and drawing and painting, art exists all around us every day.

The students are becoming the masters.

HOW AWESOME IS THIS PIECE?!?

This sculpture is taken from The Monument to the Forefathers, a sculpture in Plymouth, Massachusetts. She represents education. 📚

A small group of students worked together to bring this piece to life! She will be heading to the Fourth of July parade along with sculptures from other area schools to celebrate our nations 250th birthday!

As you may recall, group projects are rarely fun! But these young artists couldn’t have come together in a more positive, creative way. They quickly identified each other strengths and worked to those.

I am always impressed with our artists’ work. They seem to keep out doing themselves.

Look for her and others in the Van Wert Fourth of July parade this summer.

We had a small teacher workshop in the early spring for charcuterie boards!

These ladies were very patient with me! They came back again to glaze and just received their pieces last week!

Thank you for having some fun in the studio! These workshops all benefit Art Club!! 🎨🎨🎨

So proud of these graduates! 🎓 Congratulations to all. Onto the next chapter. ♥️💙

🥹 I am INCREDIBLY proud of the work my Beginning Painting students did this semester!!!

They did a lot of acrylic practice prior to this assignment with disco balls and value charts. Their objective was to paint their pet or favorite stuffed animal in the style of a famous artist.

So! I sent them home to take their photos. Then we loaded up all the artist choices on a wheel and spun the wheel to decide what artist they would concentrate on.

Once their fate was sealed, they had to do a little research on that artist to see style, color schemes, etc.

I helped them put their image into ChatGPT. We’ve talked about this before- but teaching them to use AI to support their work and not DO their work is very important right now! It’s something they face every day, and learning how to use it ethically, is very crucial to being able to co-exist with AI. They made adjustments to the AI image as needed.

Some students did opt out of using this method and chose to just dig in and stylize on their own. Definitely a point of differentiation for the students that are a little more comfortable with a brush in their hand!

Students then did a grid on the image, and a grid on their canvas. Then took time to draw their portrait in proportion from a 4x5” printout to the 16x20” canvas.

Then onto painting!

We have represented:
-Dali
-Monet
-Cezanne
-Wain
-Rothko
-Po***ck
-Matisse
-Picasso
-Klimt
-Kahlo
-Van Gogh
-Miro
-O’Keffe
-Munch
-Warhol
-de Kooning
-Michelangelo

Can you guess which painting is representing which artist?? The students would LOVE to see your guesses!!!!!

As a teacher it’s sooo fulfilling when a project hits just right! And this one checked ALL the boxes!!!! So so proud of these kids and their determination, resilience and creativity! 💙♥️

Huge shout out to Ms. Myers who “commissioned” the art department to make some artwork for the halls.

This led our senior Independent Study student, Quintin, to be inspired by the components of our Portrait of a Graduate mission.

Sometimes art comes from … just being asked to create.

All semester he has worked to bring this idea to life. His vision, patience, talent and time all came to fruition today. 🎨 Look for this hanging in halls at graduation!

We are INCREDIBLY proud of Quintin and we wish him the best as he continues on at University this fall!

All completed in colored pencil and ink.

Just couldn’t let this perfect spring day go by without getting these kids OUTSIDE to paint!!!! ☀️

They LOVED it. And some abstained from the outdoors- but that’s ok! They all are working so hard to get these paintings just right! 🎨
