🍎 a fun family-friendly adventure idea + a hometown memory 🍏

Pick-Your-Own Apples opens September 7th at Scott's Orchard
— 8 AM–4 PM for opening day!

I grew up just a few minutes from Scott's on Charity Lane in Toney. My greatest gripe from moving there when my mom married was that we couldn't even get pizza delivered, lol. we used to drive 15 minutes to meet domino's at Jeff Road and Hwy 53, so needless to say when I moved out I chose living arrangements based on proximity to RESTAURANTS!

My mama, Rinda, was a school teacher at Madison Cross Roads School where I attended K-8 in Toney, Alabama, and she always loved when it was apple slushie season.

I used to think it was so cool getting to get these hyper local "hometown icees" — fresh-pressed cider slushies, from a 100+ year old family orchard right down the road. That was our after-school and weekend tradition when we'd be out running errands.

It's officially that time again at the orchard — wander through the rows, find your favorite apples, fresh air and family fun. There's nothing like the first pick of the season.

Tickets for opening day are live now at the link in their bio. If you go, get a slushie for my mom and me. Team both, always.

It's one of those places that tastes like childhood for me.

As the world remembers the Tennessee native and her impact on millions, Alabamians can enjoy this special song while watching the beautiful Alabama sunset.

The Newk's Eatery location on Airport Road (Whitesburg Drive / South Huntsville area) permanently closed primarily due to issues related to lease renewals and escalating rental costs.

Newk's Eatery at Whitesburg Dr. in Huntsville has permanently closed. The restaurant offered sandwiches, salads, soups, and pizzas, along with grab-and-go options and family-style meals.

🔥Hungry Hungry HSV, What is your heat level?

Southern? Mild? Medium? Hot? Damn Hot? Or are you one of the fearless souls ordering Shut the Cluck Up? (I've tried it and will not do so again lol)

I’ve tried every Hattie B’s heat level over the years, and in this era of my life, I’ve settled somewhere between Medium and Hot, depending on how much chaos I’m willing to invite to lunch.

And seeing Hattie B’s open in my hometown of Huntsville feels particularly full-circle.
Before I came home and started Hungry Hungry Huntsville, I spent years covering Nashville food. I’ve written more versions of where to eat Nashville hot chicken than I could possibly count. I even designed a Nashville T-shirt. Hot chicken has quite literally been part of the job description. Ive even given speeches and tours to Nashville tourists on the dish's checked past!

So when Hattie B’s finally landed in Huntsville, of course it went straight onto the North Alabama Flavor Forecast. 📡🔥

A little hot chicken history matters here: Hattie B’s didn’t invent Nashville hot chicken. That story stretches back generations, most famously through Nashville’s Prince family. What Hattie B’s did remarkably well was help introduce the tradition to a much bigger audience, taking a distinctly Nashville food far beyond Nashville.
And after all my years eating and writing about Hattie B’s, I maintain one important piece of advice:

DO. NOT. SLEEP. ON. THE. SIDES.

Then, these are the Dirty Bird Fries, loaded with crinkle-cut fries, pimento mac & cheese, dark-meat hot chicken, comeback sauce, pickles and green onions.

They are less “side dish” and more “cancel my remaining appointments.” 🔥

There’s something wonderfully strange about spending years writing about Nashville food and then coming home to Huntsville and watching pieces of that food world arrive here within months of our arrival.

hi its hot that's your obvious forecast for the day.

Here in the cool blessed AC of our current home in Athens, my husband has been helping me build something really fun for Hungry Hungry Huntsville, and today we need your help with a little field research:

🌭 What are your favorite local food trucks across Huntsville, Athens, Madison, Decatur, and North Alabama?

Give me the truck AND the one thing we absolutely have to order.
Today’s shout-out goes to CornDogg Cravings for delivering exactly what I wanted: a freshly dipped, classic corn dog with mustard and seasoned fries. Sometimes you don’t need a reinvention. You just need a really good corn dog.
Tag your favorite food truck below so we can start building the ultimate North Alabama food-truck list. 👇
