In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, soldiers of the past—veterans of earlier wars as well as retired service members—responded with both action and reverence: some rejoined or volunteered to assist in rescue, recovery, and homeland security efforts, lending hard‑earned skills and experience to a nation in crisis, while many more honored the fallen through solemn rituals—standing watch at memorials, folding and presenting flags, laying wreaths, attending funerals, observing moments of silence, and sharing stories of sacrifice—helping to shape public commemoration and ensure that the memory of that day remained woven into the country’s military legacy and collective grief. The images our all Soldiers I had the honor and privilege to have served with during several tours in the past. Some have paid the ultimate sacrifice and many I have the pleasure to live this life with.
