The Intersection of Art & Advocacy

I was pleased to be interviewed for the summer edition of EquuStyle Magazine. Thanks to Editor, Robin Black, for such an in-depth look at my career and the impact that wild horses, stage 4 cancer, and the World Photography Awards have had on my development as a cause-related photographer.

We looked at the critical focus on animal welfare issues carried out by We Animals, the motivation for setting up an Equine-Assisted Therapy Program at Zuma's Rescue Ranch, and the wide-ranging efforts to protect wild horses by American Wild Horse Conservation.

WILD HORSE AND BURROS ROUNDUPS STARTING SOON

Colorado-based PhotoAdvocate, Scott Wilson, believes photography and photojournalism have key roles to play in supporting causes and communities we believe in.

He has built a platform of PhotoAdvocacy, or cause-related photography, speaking on behalf of wild horses in the American west, celebrating the special place they hold in the country's natural fabric, despite a daily threat of removal from their homes on public lands.

Scott is a contributor to We Animals Media, the world’s largest photojournalism agency and to American Wild Horse Conservation, for whom he acts as a spokesperson and strategist.

We Animals, has built a collection of wild horse roundup images, supported by extensive editorial captions, which is made available to media outlets covering wild horse issues.

Wilson stated, “Real change, at the legislation level, often requires a tipping point when legislative efforts meet public momentum. It’s rarely one moment or a single act that will create the change, but a plethora of actions and noise."

Your voice and actions make a difference. Please like and share widely with your friends and followers.

WHAT’S IN A BYLINE?

Well, after 18 months it has become increasingly clear the focus of EquuStyle Magazine is more about advocacy than travel. The most well-received travel articles are on traveling to see and photograph wild horses.

Organically the trajectory for EquuStyle has grown in the areas of wild horse and b***o advocacy, along with individuals and organizations working diligently to protect and preserve these beautiful animals on our public lands or help them have "soft landings" when they are adopted by individuals or sanctuaries.

By the time the second issue was finished (check out the video below), it was very apparent EquuStyle would continue to feature artists, photographers, filmmakers, and organizations that advocate for wild horses and b***os.

Equustyle’s new byline is both a more accurate description of the content readers will find in each quarterly issue and the type of artists and individuals who create for a greater purpose.

The Summer 2025 issue will be available soon! You are encouraged to subscribe for FREE, quarterly, digital issues. Please encourage your friends and others who care about horses, b***os, and all equines to subscribe. We look forward to you being a part of our growing community of equine enthusiasts!

THIS MEMORIAL DAY, DISCOVER HOW YOU CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF VETERANS 🇺🇸🐴

“Finding Hope Again: A Veteran’s Story,” shares the quiet journey of one veteran navigating life after service. Haunted by trauma and disconnected from the world around him, his path to healing begins with something unexpected: three horses and his team of facilitators.

Through powerful programs provided by our Charity Partners, veterans across the country are finding peace, purpose, and connection again—one session at a time.

As part of Horses for Mental Health's mission to spread awareness of the healing power of horses, we seek to share stories of transformation that illustrate the healing journey and personal growth people can experience through the involvement of horses in mental health programs and services.

Help us raise awareness of the power of horses by sharing this video and supporting the Seen Through Horses Campaign.

Join us for the Seen Through Horses Campaign, May 1–31, 2025, and choose one of our 95 nonprofit Charity Partners to fundraise for or donate to. Together, we can create a world where all mental health needs are met.
