Starting our artist introductions with someone whose contribution to Denver goes well beyond the hour she’ll play on September 25.

Despise has been part of Denver drum & bass for more than two decades. Behind the name, Maggie has spent that time DJing, booking artists through Recon DNB, supporting local selectors, and making sure jungle and drum & bass have a consistent home in this city. Denver has changed a lot in that time. Maggie is still here, still booking, still playing, and still putting people on.

As Despise, that history comes through in her sets too. Jungle and D&B can move into halftime, footwork, hardcore, rave, or something considerably stranger depending on where she wants to take it.

We wanted someone from Denver opening this night who has actually helped shape the community around this music. Despise was an easy choice.

Despise opens things up September 25 at The Black Box.

Across releases connected to Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Planet Mu, Ghostly International, and beyond, their work has moved through experimental electronics, hip-hop, footwork, jungle, bass music, and the spaces between them.

We’re taking over The Black Box’s main room with a 360-degree setup, placing the artists at the center of the floor and bringing the entire room closer together.
