J Bolivar’s music makes a lot more sense once you know where he comes from.
Born and raised in Quito, Ecuador and shaped as a DJ and producer in Philadelphia before landing in Denver, his sets pull from Latin bass, breaks, electro, ghetto tech, and techno - without treating any of those things like fixed categories.
That same approach runs through his own productions, where Latin club music and traditional Ecuadorian influences get pushed through a contemporary electronic framework - with various upcoming collaborations with international artists and with former releases on labels such as Colombia/Berlin’s Ruta.
He’s also been putting real work into Denver’s scene outside of his own sets. Through Hoppers, where he serves as Creative Director, he’s helped build parties and bring various international artists through the city (such as Maara, Baalti, Entrañas, and Martyn Bootyspoon), while his connection with multiple Detroit crews has further bridged the two cities together.
He’s played in Detroit various times, including Spot Lite, TV Lounge, Marble Bar, Lincoln Factory, and through his residency at Container Sounds where he headlined their Movement weekend DAY//SHIFT party.
On September 25, he joins Sinistarr for an hour-long b2b at The Black Box. The pairing made sense to us because neither of them stays particularly interested in one tempo or one corner of club music for very long.
