🚨 A referendum to create a new form of student government for MSU Denver is on this year’s ballot, Election Manager Sheldon Solis told The Metropolitan. 🗞️
🗣️ Speaker of the Senate Alondra Bañuelos submitted the referendum entitled “From Constitution to Shared Governance” to Solis via email April 21. The ballot initiative was authored by four current senators and two students running for the 2021-22 Senate. 🗳️
➡️ “This referendum is a start to a year of conversation in imagining with each and every student,” Sen. Antwaun Johnson, who prefers the name X, said of the measure he helped write. “The vote of yes is to activate advocacy in its finest.” 🙌

🚨Holidays are looking different this year with COVID-19 and to honor those that celebrate and those that do not we wanted to give a little history about last months major holiday.
November is known for Thanksgiving 🦃 but ironically, it’s Native American Heritage month as well. Instead of feasting in honor of a truce between indigenous tribes and pilgrims, check out these few facts that will bring awareness to the culture and people who sat down at this table for a historical moment.
🍗 The first feast was held after the indigenous population helped white settlers plant crops due to several of its community members dying from starvation. It began by establishing a line of trust by trading goods and having an interpreter to assist with communication between the indigenous population and those who arrived on the infamous Mayflower.
This peace didn’t last long as more settlers arrived in the East coast, bringing disease, religion and oppression. All of which led to the death and misplacement of the indigenous population. Today there are over 5 million Native Americans within the United States of American with 30% of them living on reservations. 🌎
🗓️ November officially became Native American Heritage month in 1990 after approval from then President George H.W. Bush. Across the country, the indigenous population honors and celebrates their culture and history through dance and music along with other family traditions. The Native American Heritage month website has been and is hosting virtual events to bring awareness that include conversations with the youth about food sovereignty, showcasing films about and created by Natives, as well as museums like the Smithsonian holding story circles to highlight Native artists and artwork.
🧠 With all of this now in mind, ask yourself this: What does the “Holiday Season” really mean to you? 🗣️
