DAAP - Denver African American Philanthropists are excited to announce that Mental Health has been chosen as the primary cause area for our philanthropic efforts in the upcoming grant cycle. As we embark on this journey, we recognize the unique challenges and opportunities that exist within the Black community concerning mental health.

Historically, mental health has been stigmatized and overlooked within our community, often leading to underdiagnosis, inadequate treatment, and disparities in access to care. Furthermore, systemic inequalities, discrimination, and intergenerational trauma have compounded these challenges, disproportionately affecting the mental well-being of Black individuals and families.

Considering these realities, DAAP is committed to prioritizing mental health initiatives that are culturally competent, accessible, and tailored to the specific needs of the Black community of Denver, Colorado.

Proposals must be submitted by Friday, May 3, 2024, at 5 p.m. (MDT)

Founded in 2009 as a co-working space (with new ownership as of 2022), Green Spaces is now home to organizations from a variety of industries, including B-CORP/B-LAB, civil rights law, and marketing and branding agencies. With its cost-effective leasing options and community resources, Green Spaces aims to create a thriving ecosystem and eliminate barriers for emerging businesses.

“Green Spaces is all about creating accessible spaces, nurturing growth, and cultivating collaboration,” said Jevon Taylor, CEO of Green Spaces. “With the Marketplace, we’re adding more than just retail space; this is about building a launch pad for small businesses and creatives to enhance their connections within the community and serving as a foundation for their growth. Green Spaces’ Marketplace also provides an opportunity for Denverites to engage with and support some of our city’s top small businesses and artists.”

Fully leased at opening, the new Marketplace offering will feature a variety of local vendors, including Zero Market, Simple Switch, It’s a Bodega, Love Weld, LAAW Designs, Theo & Amelia, Eternal Balance Candles ,Black + Blossomed, Migas Coffee and Melody Market. The Marketplace will be open to the public and will operate daily from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

“Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, my consistent goal has been to be a catalyst for sustainability, in the many forms it exists in, and to support future generations in the process,” Taylor added. “This space represents an important step towards achieving that goal.”

In addition to owning and operating Green Spaces, Taylor works to provide platforms to amplify the voices of local creators and spearheads various educational and environmental programs throughout the city. As part of the Green Dot Coalition, he’s supported the implementation of more green infrastructure and tree planting in environmentally omitted business districts in Globeville and the greater Five Points neighborhood alongside the National Wildlife Federation and Design Workshop Foundation. He currently serves on RiNo Art District’s Business Improvement District board, where he focuses on providing business and creative support, mobility, and public realm enhancements.

“Green Spaces is an incredible resource in our community that expands opportunities and raises visibility for small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and local artists in the District,” said Charity Von Guinness, executive director of RiNo Art District. “We are so proud to have Jevon on our Business Improvement District board and to count Green Spaces among our members. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with them on community-focused events that contribute to the vitality of our District.”

L’École, Denver’s home for French Language Immersive Education

Kwon Atlas

www.fivepointsatlas.com/stories/lcole-denvers-home-for-french-language-immersive-education

L’École de Denver, a private French immersion academy, has been teaching and maintaining the language of French Denverites for the last few years right here in the Five Points area. L’École has quickly become a home away from home for many immigrants from French-speaking countries but also those who want to get their young kids started with a language at a young age. Like many great things, L’École started during the Pandemic as the brainchild of Angela Strange, who sought to close this gap in education in Denver. Exposure to language at a young age is key to language adoption as you get older. Strange started the school in her home, and it has grown to a full-service middle school for grades 5th, 6th, and 7th and a preschool for ages 2.5-4.5. L’École is part of a natural pipeline for french speaking students to the French American School, which services K-5. Both schools are looking to continue to grow to the eighth grade but need steady enrollment of french proficient students to add a grade every year. Preschoolers don’t need to be proficient to start as they gain mastery through normal play and early learning while French is woven into the instruction. Although the L’École school is a private school, the preschool program is Universal Preschool, DDP, and CCAP eligible. L'École de Denver is planning on developing its PreK program, collaborating with museums and theaters to make the education more rounded.

The school benefits from the strong community of committed and active parents and the Five Points Area. Administrative Director Arina Popova works to enhance the experience of the students at L’École with frequent trips to Denver’s Museums, Art Centers, and Park amenities. L’École also seeks to expand opportunities for students to visit France and other french speaking countries as well as organize exchanges with french students. The curriculum at L’École is rigorous and fun, and the staff invites interested parents to observe a class and learn more by visiting www.ecoledenver.com . For additional information, please email [email protected]. Enrollment is open for the 2023-2024 year.

When Cleo Parker Robinson goes deep, her art and social justice vision brings us all to . “Sacred Spaces?”, the 2022 Fall Concert at The Ellie September 17 & 18, is anchored by tragic church arson: 2019 in Louisiana, and 1925 at the Historic Shorter AME Church in Denver. The social justice reputation of Cleo Parker Robinson Dance linked Louisiana’s Performing Arts Serving Acadiana (PASA) to commission our renowned Denver arts institution. The result is an exquisite collaboration of healing work. Together with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and a new composition by their Artistic Director Adonis Rose, their live performance is not to be missed. Brazilian choreographer Roseangela Silvestre’s “Temple In Motion” and CPRD Associate Artistic Director Winifred Harris’ “Depouillé” (Bare) provide the through line of beautiful modern dance to the World Premiere of “Sacred Spaces?”, the newest modern dance masterwork by Cleo Parker Robinson with Artistic Collaborator Millicent Johnnie of Louisiana. Arts & Venues Call for Local Artists for Art Drop Day

Denver Arts & Venues Calls for Local Artists, Businesses, and Community Members to Connect with Others Through Denver Art Drop Day
Denver Arts & Venues calls for local artists, businesses, and community members to delight and surprise Denver residents, and create positive connections through art by committing to participate in World Art Drop Day Tuesday, Sept. 6.

World Art Drop Day occurs annually on the first Tuesday of September and was conceived by Utah’s Jake Parker with the goal of connecting people to one another and generating random bonds between strangers through the act of creating and giving.

“Art Drop Day is one of my favorite events of the year. It's a day for the community to come together over our shared love of art and creativity. Anyone can participate - whether it's the process of creating and hiding your work or searching for hidden pieces and finding a new favorite artist in the process.,” said Brooke Dilling, Denver Arts & Venues manager of cultural programs. “Since Arts & Venues started promoting Art Drop Day in 2015, we have seen participation grow dramatically, with people not only dropping art on the first Tuesday of September and not only in Denver, but also throughout the year and all over the state, and the Facebook group has grown almost 4,200 members.”

Denver Arts & Venues will be celebrating the day by dropping more than 20 framed prints of pieces from the Denver Public Art collection all over Denver, hiding at least one photo in each city council district in locations like City Park, downtown Denver and Denver International Airport.

So, how do artists, businesses, and individuals get involved? First, artists commit to participating by filling out the online form and creating a small, inexpensive piece or two to share on Art Drop Day. Businesses can support local artists by purchasing artwork or art supplies, or they can host an art-making party with their staff. Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 6, artists and other participants hide art around town. Next, they drop hints and clues on social media so people can find their creations, and finally, the artists and participants watch and wait for someone to discover the hidden works.

The public can participate in the fun and search for art by following and on social media, or by joining the Art Drop Denver Facebook group.

There is no deadline for artists who wish to participate in Art Drop Denver. More information and FAQs can be found on ArtsandVenues.com/ArtDrop.
