While many patrons may think of the library as a spot to pick up a book temporarily, Bemis Public Library’s year-round Used Book Store gives visitors a spot to find a new read — and build up their home library.

The Used Book Store is operated by the Friends of the Littleton Library and Museum, and raises funds for the nonprofit, which in turn uses those funds to support programming at the Littleton Museum and Bemis Public Library.

Littleton Public Schools’ (LPS) Board of Education has voted 5-0 to deny an application made by STEM School Highlands Ranch to open a charter high school within LPS.

STEM School, which is under contract for the property at 1101 W. Mineral Avenue, which formerly housed Lockheed Martin offices, applied to join LPS as a charter school, in order to open a second campus dedicated to the school’s high school students. However, the LPS Board of Education denied the application during a board meeting on May 28, citing concerns that the school would not serve students within the Littleton school district.

While summer break can mean a pause from the hustle and bustle of the school year, that doesn’t mean that the learning has to end. Summer reading programs offer kids the chance to keep reading — and have fun doing it.

Summer reading programs, originally intended to help prevent the “summer slide” — where students' academic skills decline over the long break, have evolved into summers filled with programming to help support families over the break and get kids excited about reading.

The overall number of homeless people in Arapahoe County increased over last year, but fewer people were unsheltered, according to information gathered in the annual one-night Point-In-Time Survey.

For one January night each year, Coordination of Care (CoC) entities, or local organizations that connect unhoused people to services, conduct Point-in-Time (PIT) counts.

The Arapahoe County Detention Center has undergone a recently completed expansion and renovation, upgrading the facility’s medical and behavioral health spaces.

As facilities age, they can be outgrown, needing more space and newer amenities. In Arapahoe County, the Detention Center was one of those facilities — until recently.

Trenton Moskovita, the now 19-year-old man who assaulted a 7-year-old girl in a Pirates Cove bathroom last July, received a 22-year prison sentence on May 27. “I personally watched my granddaughter change before my eyes," the victim's grandmother wrote to the court. "I have seen fear replace comfort and sadness replace carefree happiness. I have seen confusion and emotional pain take the place of the innocence that every child deserves to have.”

In recent years, STEM School Highlands Ranch has grown beyond the limits of its building — and the school is looking outside of Douglas County School District for an expansion.

STEM School is looking to expand to a second campus, located at 1101 West Mineral Avenue in Littleton, across the street from Littleton Academy Charter School. STEM School is under contract for the property, pending approval from Littleton Public Schools district and rezoning from the City of Littleton.

While the Littleton Museum’s bovine residents are an adorable sight during Littletonians’ visits, the animals serve more of a purpose than simply looking cute. The museum’s upcoming Divine Bovine event will highlight what the animals provide — and have provided throughout the city’s history — milk, meat and muscle.

While Littleton City Council will soon need to decide whether to save or remove the historic Lee Gulch flumes, the City of Englewood is offering Littleton up to $83,500 to
