Weld RE-8 expects 69 more students walking through its doors this October — a 3.1% bump. So why does the figure that actually drives state funding drop by 21.5 students?

Blame Colorado's multi-year enrollment averaging. Even so, total program funding rises about 3% to $27.8 million, and the proposed budget closes a multi-million-dollar deficit.

Suzie Glassman explains the formula behind the numbers in this week's Class Notes. Free every Friday — subscribe:

27J Schools — which serves Fort Lupton-area families along with Brighton, Commerce City and Thornton — approved new attendance boundaries this month that take effect in fall 2027.

Two new schools are driving the changes: Rocky Vista High School in Commerce City and Talon Ridge Middle School in Thornton. Prairie View High in Brighton will lose more than 600 students by 2030; Brighton High and Riverdale Ridge see smaller shifts.

Families won't be able to look up their address until the district updates its online boundary tool later this year, before open enrollment opens Dec. 1.

Reporting by Education Editor Suzie Glassman:

School boundaries in district 27J will shift by fall 2027, accommodating new schools and easing overcrowding, but also reducing Prairie View High’s enrollment significantly. Families await updated tools.

The Luck of the Broncos: Remembering ‘Rocky the Leprechaun’.
Perhaps the most famous of all Broncos super-fans was Rocky the Leprechaun — a small, orange and blue-donned man with a big personality who lit a fire in the Broncos’ crowd for decades. He crossed the other side of the rainbow on May 4 at age 75.
